Anyone know anything about the dobro played on Randy Travis’s “Forever And Ever Amen”? Some of the licks sound like they have pedal movements or either two tracks layered. Who played on this song? |

I believe Paul Franklin played that on the Pedabro. An instrument built by his father Mr. Paul Franklin Sr. who built all the Franklin pedal steels.
Like a pedal steel with a resonator but also used a magnetic steel guitar pickup. He used it a fair amount in that era, late 80s, early, maybe mid 90s. I don't remember everything right off, but I know it was used on some Keith Whitley recordings too.
A unique instrument of which only a few were built. Something like 25. Dunno where they all are.
Might be a post or two and some pics of one here somewhere if you feel like searching the forum.
I remember reading somewhere that Doyle Grisham, of Jimmy Buffet band fame, played the pedal steel on that record. |

Before Doyle Grisham joined Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, he'd played steel on a few Randy Travis songs, like "1982", "On The Other Hand", "Deeper Than The Holler", and "Forever And Ever Amen"-which featured Paul Franklin on pedabro, while Doyle was playin' steel.

discogs.com lists only Doyle on pedal steel.
Paul on ped-a-bro and JD on Dobro for the album. |
