If you have a thick pad on your Sd 10 that’s even with strings you might like this set up better.

Yes Larry…Doug J. playing Bonnie Marie…fine song and he could probably play it upside down and “bass-ackerds” as we use to say in Arkansas….right Johnnie? More power to ya…I’ll stay with trying to play one neck at a time…

I've always worn mine on the left wrist. So does every band member and friend I could find pics of. The only ones I know offhand that wear a watch on the right wrist are left handed!

Gotta watch watcha say aroun’ here!

The wrist pad on my Williams is the same height as the neck. Very sensible and much more comfortable than I thought it was going to be.

I believe this thread title was changed to discuss the pad - I recall the original thread was about playing both necks at the same time.

But now that it's about the pad - I actually like the slightly higher pad on my SD-10 because it reminds me to keep my wrists straight like this photo



I'm tall and sit fairly high. Even though I raise the steel, my arms are still angled down quite a bit. So there is a tendency to let my wrist bend like this, or even a little more extremely:



If I do that, I won't last long before I start to get some real wrist pain. Of course, not an issue on a D10 - the C6 strings digging into my wrists gives me that reminder to straighten out my wrists.

We're all different, ergo what passes for 'good' ergonomics is different.

Just saying some Sd 10 steels pad is much too tall, some pads are same height as strings.

Me being a physical therapist; I can tell you ergonomically, a bent wrist is BAD.. and ergonomically you really want your forearm parallel to the ground and elbow in straight below shoulder and you will get rid of a lot of tension of ligament and tendon fibers that eventually will cause lots of "repetitive motion" symptoms.

Yeah Ronald; I was an Elite Gymnastics Coach pretty much through the 80's; so in college, being a gymnast; I knew I would eventually Teach gymnastics and athletics; but not wanting PT as carrer...so I just did Associate Degree; and after I had a kid make the 1988 Olympic Team to Korea; I dropped out of Teaching Athletics and became a Musician/Steel Player and taught Steel Guitar and also PGA Teaching Professional.. But now no more teaching of Any kind as I just turned 60; just play/produce/record music and restore Sho~bud's.
But yes; I can fix any physical prob. one may have....regular doctors still don't have a clue how the body moves and circulates...ha...(can you tell I don't care for Doctors...ha.....(ortho's are alright..ha...LOL)

Ricky Sho Bud as a three quarter inch drop on back deck .
The later model name brand steels have a quarter inch drop on back neck.

Sho bud is the ideal steel for a pad.

As a single neck player I haven’t really understood why a padded rest is needed.

Yes the back neck and/or pad and/or small ledge pad and/or no pad single-10; can ALL BE PLAYED ergonomically correct; by knowing and practicing those positions with arms and wrists I mentioned in my post above. NONE of the necks/pads/no pad should be any help in any way..as if your forearm is touching anything while you are moving side to side, will create a tension in playing and that is what we are all trying to overcome. Start with sitting height and the neck you play; are in position to have forearms parallel to the ground and on from there.
