Usually I can solve the problem quickly on other guitars with a piece of wire but this thing buzzes louder when I touch the strings. It's the later Maverick with the brown shelf paper. Is it the cheap pot metal or am I just missing something? I could just throw in a BL 710 and call it day but I prefer single coil pickups.

Thanks

Is the pickup grounded to the strings?? Look at ground wire from pickup to input jack. If it's not spliced somewhere and running under a bracket that touches the strings....then run a extra ground wire from input jack to a screw point or bracket that touches the fingers that hold the strings.

Thank you! I'll have a look tonight.

Does the pickup resistance measure to a typical value?
Possibly the pickup is open and producing sound capacitively and therefore the buzz.

Also important for absolute best buzz minimization is grounding the magnets themselves (often done withe the start wire ala the Emmons braid you see coming out of the pickup), but your description sounds like a bigger picture issue.

Thanks Ricky. I was able to reduce the hum a lot by following your advice. It's barely acceptable now! Before it was totally unacceptable. LOL! Still a single coil, but sounds good.

Glad you have it mostly sorted.

Somebody recently posted a possible fix for grounding issues -- I think it was Donny Hinson, but don't quote me -- and they recommended unscrewing the jack from the end-plate and then screwing it back in. Over time, corrosion can corrupt the grounding connection provided by the jack touching the end-plate, and reattaching the jack can sometimes break the crud and make a better connection.

Oh you're mighty welcome, and yes now you're hearing as good as that gets, still a great sounding single coil.
