The real test comes when he shows her the grass-skirt and coconut top he bought her. Laughing

Huh, he must have settled on a tuning then. Or he's not telling her about the years of crippling indecision and worry he must have faced. Muttering

Gotta be a fake. It's pretty obvious from the artwork he's playing the second chord in Hang On Sloopy. Decidedly un-Hawaiian.

Selling dreams. Much like the old Hawaiian sheet music covers. Love these vintage ads.

Well put, Doug. It really is about dreaming. I can't calculate what playing lap guitar has meant for my life both professionally and as a conduit for soulful self expression - even self-revelation. Unlike Marge, my wife still tells me "I prefer to hear you play regular guitar", but I still soldier on, tonebar in hand. Smile

A few years later, tired of having sand kicked in his face, Jim sold his Hawaiian guitar to pay for the Charles Atlas bodybuilding course.

As the repititious movement of the 2.5 oz bar did nothing to build his biceps and the perpetual sitting destroyed his quads and calf muscles, Jim’s obsessive need to practice 16 hours a day withered him into a 98 lb. weakling.

Yes this actually happened to me !!
I was in the 9th grade and played my guitar with a piece of metal and somehow managed to swoon this girl and make her mine.
Two weeks later she dumped me for a football player.
