I'd like to re-string my acoustic lap steel from open D to dobro tuning - GBDGBD. The existing string gauges would put undue strain on the guitar if I tried to re-tune.
Can anyone suggest a stringing gauge for dobro tuning that would sound good on acoustic lap steel but also limit strain on the guitar?
Many thanks for looking. _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

A regular set of medium gauge strings (.012-.054) should do the trick. What type of acoustic lap steel are you playing? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Many thanks for the prompt replies!
I omitted to mention this is a Weissenborn style guitar made in the UK by Anderwood Guitars. Unfortunately their web-site is unavailable, as I would have asked them directly. I also omitted to mention the scale length is 24.5" (if this helps). _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

Anderwood ceased trading about 2 years ago. Anderwood did'nt make any guitars; most were made in China, the handmade top of the range custom models were, and still are, made by Tom Buchanan in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. |

What gauge strings do you have on it at the moment for open D?
If it is fine with them, make adjustments to gauge on the strings which are being tuned up.
Probably not more than a 50 for the low G and 46 for the low B _________________ Duesenberg Fairytale

I use medium guitar strings on my acoustic steels and have no problems going between low G tuning and D tuning with the same strings.

I would er to the light side when putting any wood acoustic steel in a high bass tuning, I've seen so many old one's with damage and warping from too much tension.
If this is a lower end, laminated import it will be much more forgiving than a lightly made solid wood Weissenborn.
I'd start with a regular light 12 to 52 set and beef up the skinny E and B a few gauges. |
