What is the difference between playing PSG and solving a Rubic's Cube.
Rubic's Cube only requires use of your hands and PSG requires you to solve it in time with the band!  |

Or, looked at another way, a Rubik's Cube has only one correct solution, while a pedal steel has an infinite number, all good.

| Got very excited seeing this post as my son and I spent a lot of time when he was in school running all over Texas, and a few side trips to Louisiana, and Oklahoma going to Rubiks cube competitions! Looking forward to also doing some running for myself to steel conventions. |

Another musician told me a few days ago, "I think the pedal steel is like a piano. You can play anything on it."
I like that  , but... "Chopsticks" is very easy on piano. It's a Rubik's Cube puzzle on pedal steel. Modulating up or down a half-step is very easy on pedal steel. It's crazy town on piano, with all them black keys.
Pedal steel is a whole different way of thinking about music. There's no other instrument like it.

A short book and a week of practice and you can solve any rubic's cube.
20 years (going on 5) of playing steel, and thinking I will probably need Elon Musk's new AI module installed in my brain. |

Agreed. Back in the day, I bought the book and memorized the solution. I was able to solve any Rubik's Cube in a matter of minutes. (People these days can reportedly do it in seconds) If only playing steel was that simple...... |

I arrived early to the Texas Steel Guitar show. Not many people were there yet, so I bumped into this baldheaded guy. I’m a newbie hillbilly player from Asheville NC, fresh off the turnip truck - and don’t know anybody. We joked around about our short haircuts, and then I made a cliché comment, “The steel is kind of like flying an airplane.”
He grinned and said, “It’s more like flying a helicopter.”
The next day I looked up on stage, when the MC said, “Ladies and gentlemen Mike Summey.” Wow - Little did I know that I had been talking to royalty. And Mike’s pedal Steel playing is as good as his quick comebacks. |

A Rubit's Cube only has 6 sides, Red, White, Blue, Yellow, Green and Tan to get on each side.
A Rubit'S Cube Has no Pedals or Knee Levers to move the colors, Like a steel has that moves the notes.
I think about Mike Summey's statement, About flying a Helicopter very often.
I was in the U.S Army in 1962-5. They gave us a Eye, Hand and Foot coordination test. I passed it with a very high score. They waved a set of Warrant Officers Bars at Me, With rank of Private.
That night our old Platoon Sargent called the 2 of us who scored high in his room. Ever heard of a place called Viet Nam? And explained that many old NCO's thought it would get a big as Korea Conflict. A lot of Helicopters would be used for transportation, Because of jungle, hills and rice paddies.
I went on to operate Trucks, Bull Dozers, Graders and Cranes, Used my coordination well. They still came around wanting equipment operators to become helicopter pilots.
Every once in a while when I set down at my steel to practice or play a show.
It runs through my mind, It would have been easier to fly a Helicopter. Just Eye, Ear, Hand and Foot Coordination, NO DANG KNEE LEVERS ON A HELICOPTER.

I told someone at the gig tonight that playing steel was like flying an airplane, but I like the helicopter analogy better. just wish I'D thought of it.....
Upon further reflection, however, I like it even better that crashing and burning on steel doesn't have the rather drastic consequences of crashing a machine that actually leaves the ground.
Or even wrecking a train!  |
