I told my wife that playing PSG requires doing 10 things at the same time involving both hands, both feet and your knees. If you mess up any of the 10 it ends up sounding bad! |

Although I'm 70 now I keep up with the trombone as I still get asked to play from time to time. But there are only three things to think about and I find practice boring.
The pedal steel is the instrument that keeps me mentally sharp, and difficult though it is I never get fed up _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I've had similar experience with the sax. I also play bass and guitar. I'm just now figuring out the lap steel and VERY casually shopping for a PSG. |

Your mind is doing another 10 calculations so make that 20!
That's the tough part for me. I can hammer our my 1, 4, 5, 6m chords with AB, AF, etc. without too much difficulty. But the fretboard is like an intricate weave of chords and intervals, and grasping and applying that concept in real time is the real challenge for me. _________________ Marlen S12 pedal steel

The Late Great Jeff Newman is credited with the following quote,
“Steel guitar is like playing chess in the dark with three players". 😳😉 |

That's a humorous way to make a serious point.
The neck of any other guitar is two-dimensional, but a PSG generates a stack of different tunings depending on what pedals or levers are engaged, so what we end up with is a three-dimensional array of possible notes!
3D chess, anyone? _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!
