Thinking about making my ,peavey Vegas amp into a head unit,is there a minimum ,distance your reverb pan has to be from the amp chassis,

Hi Larry. All the 400 heads cabs I've built have about 9 in. of internal height. Generally the cabinet is 10 1/2 in. O.D. which nets 9 in. internally, more or less using 3/4 in. plywood or pine board. My model is from a diagram furnished years ago by John Lemay for a NV400 head cab build.
Of course the more distance the better, but much more and you lose any benefits of size, weight and space.
Tank orientation is the key. With everything connected and the amp powered up, you can move the tank around until you find the ideal location with the least amount of hum. Most times I can find a totally quiet spot, other times the quietest spot.
Here's a thread that shows the NV400 drawing but of course you'd have to adjust the width for a Vegas chassis.
