Hey Gang -- I'm trying to find a good volume pedal to use with my lap-steel to get those nice pedal-steel-style "swelling" sounds.

A year ago, I originally purchased a simple Ernie Ball VPJR. However, I found the pot had a very noisey/staticky sound. I don't want static in my swells! I want beautiful clean swells. So I returned it and gave up on the quest for a while.

This month I decided to spend the $300+ on a proper Goodrich L-10K active pedal. I bought it brand new, from a dealer on Reverb. My assumption was that, since this is an active pedal favored by many steelers, it would have a super clean sound.

However, when I got the pedal in the mail, I found that it has a similar annoying static sound! I tried replacing the 9V battery but it didn't help.

What do y'all think, what do you recommend? Is this probably a broken pedal that I should return? Or am I misunderstanding how a volume pedal is supposed to work?

(Most of the posts I see on this forum about this kind of question suggest replacing the pots or the op-amps. But this is a brand-new pedal -- none of these parts should need replacing.)

Your problem could be in the amp! If an amp has DC present at the input jack (caused by a leaky coupling cap), almost any volume pedal may be noisy. Have a tech check out the amp when a new pedal doesn't fix that scratchy sound.

Interesting, thanks Donny!

I'm actually just using a portable headphone amp -- this Electro-Harmonix thing:

Could that be the issue?

I actually don't have a proper guitar amp -- I tend to just practice on headphones. But I can try using a few other headphone amps and see if they behave differently.

I think your problem lies in the fact that headphone amps require a Line level output.

PM me. I might be able to help you out.

You bought the Goodrich brand new, but it's an old model that isn't produced for a long time. It probably has been laying on the shelf for many years. Maybe a long time of not using could affect the pot.

Tim,

I recently had the same issue with my L10K and have had the same issue intermittently for quite some time. I tried to take the pedal apart but it wasn't easy. I was able to see a lot of dust inside of it so I cleaned it with spray cleaner and sprayed the pot with flux remover for electronics. The issue went away. I have also noticed that the battery can cause the problem if it is not a full battery. I've seen my battery get to 9.3 volts and cause static. I wish Goodrich would have installed a power supply jack! Also, make sure you unplug the amp side so as not to drain the battery when not in use.
