TRADING LICKS
Join Pedal Steel Hall of Famers Tommy White and Paul Franklin as they sit down at their guitars and trade licks!
Tommy and Paul take a chord progression in the style of "I Fall To Pieces" and break it down into 4-bar sections. This is how they are able to endlessly generate licks and ideas...seeing music as a series of chords, and connecting them musically and tastefully.
While doing so, they point out how the incorporate many different expressive subtleties, dynamics and nuances and demonstrate how to use the pedal steel's unique properties to create signature licks.
Many of the licks are played at a Shuffle feel and tempo, then slowed down to a Ballad feel to show the versatility of a musically sound idea. Simple variations using the 1, 4 and 5 chords give them plenty of options:

They also go in-depth on playing over Minor Chords, Diminished chords and Augmented chords.

Great concept for a teaching video, but maybe we should wait until a couple of better players has the same idea.... right?
