Yo Andy...Thanks for taking the trouble and time to bring us Kayton's interview with Laurie. He has a similar attitude towards pedals as do I. It's a great instrument in the proper hands, wonderful chordal capabilities, etc. However, I do feel the steel bar manipulation of the left hand is where the true beauty lies, not with the feet....big exception is Bill Stafford who manages to bring out the real beauty of the pedal guitar. (IMHO) Anyway, I'll always remain a non-pedal player (as with Kayton), and keep struggling.

Thanks, Andy. That's a real gem. We appreciate you taking the time to post a transcript. Good work!

I interviewed Kayton at the Florida Folk Festival about 3 years ago and will try to get a copy of the archival tape and post a transcriptthis summer. Kayton was born and raised in north Florida and played a lot around here before moving to Nashville. He still has family here.

By the way, Kayton uses a Stevens bar to work all his magic. He and Vassar Clements made a lot of jaws drop when they sat in with Wayne Martin's western swing band to play for a dance at the festival. Both are incredible improvisers. Plans are to have Kayton back for the 50th anniversary festival Memorial Day weekend 2002. Vassar comes every year. I'll post a notice when it gets closer.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the links, Andy. Among the great things about the Forum are the "buried treasures", like those interviews, that get unearthed.
Good reading!

Thanks for posting this interview. I met Kayton last August, he came to Nova Scotia for the Hank Snow tribute which is held in Bridgewater NS annually. He and his wife Iva Lee and bass player Roger Carroll performed there, and also met with the Atlantic Steel Guitar Club. He's a great musician and a fine human being. I was amazed by his playing when I saw him on the Opry years ago, and it was a real treat to hear him play in person, doing the Hank Snow tunes plus a wide variety of instrumentals.

I got this link in my email this morning. It's a CD by Purley Curtis. The cut of " Letter Edged in Black" sounds like Kayton. I'm sure it is. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/158/perley_curtis.html

Well; if it isn't Kayton than it has to be Jerry Byrd !! I can close my eyes and drift back 50 or more years to that place I will always call home and this music filling my heart and soul with such a yearning that I have never fulfilled the need for hearing it enough. Reading the interview is like being there and talking to him in person and I thank both of you for the article and the song !!

Best Regards, Paul

Definitely Kayton...nobody better to play Golden Rocket than the man who played it behind Hank all those years! He also plays on "Letter Etched In Black," another tune in that album. I haven't heard the whole disc yet, but "My Blue Tears" has some pretty nice dobro in it.

The new Hank Williams III CD "Lovesick, Broke, and Driftin'" has many cuts with Kayton.
