Does anyone know what tuning Doug is using on Pipeline? I think it is some version of E but I am still new to this.

What a great job he does on this tune!

It's in the description of the video;

"Surfs Up! Fender Deluxe 8, Em11 tuning. (high to low) G E D B A F# D B I came up with this tuning specifically to play this song. It's not one of the standard tunings. My site: www.playsteelguitar.com"

Thanks for posting this, Doug. Yes, the tuning I'm using is (high to low) G E D B A F# D B. It's Not one of the standard steel guitar tunings, and I would not recommend it as a useful, all-round tuning. I created it just to play this particular melody easily. I did the same thing for my "Penetration" and "Country String Pulls" videos... came up with unique tunings for those songs.

Thanks for all the replies, Doug Beaumier, what a great steel guitar song this is. I have listened to it over and over! I have decided I need to rely less on tab and more on my ear, this is going to be my first attempt at transcription.

Wish me luck.

A wise decision. You’ll discover that any song can be played on any tuning. You just need to flesh out the melody and the chords on whatever tuning you’re using.
