Topic: Do You Know the Original Source of this Buddy Emmons Quote? |

Hi folks,
I need a little help before my deadline Thursday July 1st. Does anyone remember where Buddy Emmons said this? In print? On the Forum? Elsewhere?
“Up to the time I heard Pat Martino, I was playing more or less ‘the tuning.’ I could play with speed and ease but never with what I thought sounded like an intelligent approach to solos. For some strange reason, Pat’s scales seemed to open the door for me to a world that was already there and I didn’t know it. His substitution of the G five minor seventh chord for C seventh solos was a scale I had played before but never associated it with a minor.â€

I believe that Ernie said that he'd pruned the 'Ask Buddy' library as it had become so vast. Having said that, I very much doubt that he'd have removed a quote of that nature, pertaining as it does to E's musical motivations.
I must say that I thought that 'Ask Buddy was the source but I could be wrong. What other generally-available sources are there? There's this Forum, of course; as you're aware, he sometimes really 'opened up' on here. Maybe it was a Guitar Player magazine interview at some point?
I certainly recall reading the quote.

What does he mean by "G five minor seventh"?
Does it mean G7 without the 3rd?

I’m pretty sure I read that in an interview Guitar Player Magazine did in the late 70s.
I may be wrong, as that was long ago and I was a kid.

What this is referring to is the Pat Martino “convert to minor†concept.
on C7 you play the Dorian scale from the 5th of the C7.
C7 = G Dorian
There are other important ways that Pat used this minor scale approach
Another example:
E-7b5 = G Dorian

A quick reply: yesterday before posting this I combed through the Guitar Player and Steel Guitarist magazine issues. No luck. I also searched though "Questions" at Buddyemmons.com and tried my luck at searching on the Forum and on the Forum Archives, although the Forum searches were not comprehensive.
This could have been dictated from a live video, from a taped interview other than my own, or from some other source. My bad for not attaching the source to the quote's Word document on my computer.
The bottom line: since the book is to be considered as university-level research, I will have to "paraphrase" this quote if I can't cite the source.
My deadline is 11:59 on Thursday night July 1st. Drama! :0) |

I found out what issue has the Buddy Emmons interview, but have no online access to it.
Guitar Player Magazine, May, 1976, with Toy Caldwell on the cover.
Can’t say for sure that quote is in that article, but my 59 year old brain remembers it that way. |

Thanks Bill. I checked it twice. It's not there unfortunately. It's also not in the "Future of the Steel Guitar" article I did for GP around 1980.
Could it be in any of the back issues of Steel Guitarist magazine? I checked the Buddy Emmons cover story, but I don't have any of the other issues.... |

I have all the SG issues. I don't remember that quote in the magazine. I was just reading At E's column, Minor Abrasions in the Pockets, 1981 issue, he does credit Martino for being the inspiration for his approach to the C6th minor pockets. That quote doesn't appear there.
I'll look through the other issues and will let you know if I find anything. |

In the meantime, we've entered a paraphrased version that will read something -- but not exactly -- like this:
"Before he heard Pat Martino, Buddy felt he could play with speed and ease wherever his tuning led him, but without a cohesive approach to his solos. For some reason, Martino's playing opened a door, inspiring Emmons to look at scales and intervals with a fresh perspective." |

Mr Renn has been a primary consultant and aide de camp throughout this entire adventure. I may have to shoot him a text this morning and see if this one final question rings a bell. It's a quote that has been on my computer since way before Mr. Emmons and I started the book together in 2010. If nothing else, some of you can write it down on the back of your favorite photo of Buddy and use it as a bookmark.

Fish, it's from "The Pedal Steel Picker's Page", which was online somewhere at sometime, and I saved it as a PDF. It may be drawn from questions asked of Buddy here on the forum?
