I could pick up a mid 50s National T8 for a very reasonable price, but I already have one of those. Would it be a travesty, blasphemous, or really stupid to remove the third neck for a single 8, and keep necks one and two together with the original switches and plate in the middle? There would be some finish work to close off the wooden separation sides, and install a vol and tone pot with capacitor on the single neck.

Has this been done before? Could it be a good idea?

I think it would be a travesty simply because no-one is making T8's or for that matter D8's on anything but bespoke basis these days whereas it is far simpler to find a single 8 used (less so new).

I've never seen a National T8 on Reverb or similar sites so I guess they are rarer than D8s. I do think it would be a shame to break one up.

It really would be a shame. Just sell it and buy what you want. There are limited vintage T8s out there.

See your PMs!

My vote is just buy a single 8.

Buy a single 8. Plenty to choose from without messing up a cool guitar.

I'll join the choir...If it's in original condition I say keep it the way it is. There aren't that many triples out there.

I've got a single Deluxe 6, in the dark finish that is pristine that I would part with. Trap pickup and original case.

The National consoles tend to be a little less revered than the other brands (eg Fenders, Gibsons, and Rics) whether fairly or not, so you might get a little bit less blowback there than from butchering up a Stringmaster, DW16, or Grande Console. Still I would say, sort out why you would want to do that...if its just because its a good deal and available, there are a fair amount of single neck and doubleneck instruments out there. It might be more work than would be beneficial...resale value would go down, and note that the leg sockets would have to be moved onto the middle neck if you're going to keep that one a console.

If you buy it its your guitar of course, but like the others are saying, with them as rare as they are, nice to keep them intact in circulation for future players to be able to get hold of (since the supply is steadily dwindling of multineck console steels). I guess I'd say, look at what you're after...if you are absolutely in love with the sound of the National console, specifically, and you really want a single neck version, then yeah, I see some practical benefit. If you just want a single neck steel, and this seems like a good deal, I'd say, save your money for a Clinesmith haha. (or plenty of cheaper options too, vintage and new-made)
