I am looking for some advice taking the training wheels and begin playing without having to rely on tablature.

Music theory and learning to read music is the ticket.

Develop your ears. Play along with records, YouTube, radio, whatever you choose. But develop your ears to learn melodies and simple chord changes.

I found sticking with one tuning (even though I still play around with several) as a primary helped me get more to that natural know-your-way-around-the-fretboard feel I have (and many of us have) in good old EADGBE. I can play tunes in B11, open G, and others, but C6 or C13 feels like home. And that's a good base platform to start developing improvisational skills and just picking out melodies (that's a lot harder to do if you don't have a sense for where the notes are on adjacent strings).

You have two suggested routes now! Reading + Theory & Playing Along with recordings

My “vote” goes mostly to practice with other musicians a la Mike Neer. Of course a little theory never hurt anyone!

Both suggestions aren’t mutually exclusive. 😎
