I never thought this would happen. I bought my new Rains so that I could keep a Steel set up at home all the time. After a week of playing it, I will just have to use it at home and on the job. Don't get me wrong... I love my Emmons. It was an expensive steel when new, over $5k from Bobbie Seymour. 8x10, compensators... loaded.
It sounds great. I'm used to it. It's just that my new Rains is so darned fantastic, it's hard to accept what my ears are telling me. Well... I packed away the Emmons today. The Rains guitars are special...

I did one better. I got my new Franklin D-10 on Dec 28, 1981. By Feb 1982 the 71 Emmons D-10 (Black ) was sold and gone.

I've sold items I wish I hadn't sold but the Emmons was not one of them.

I'm still playing the Franklin and it's the only pedal steel I have.

Jack. I did the same thing too, but for a different reason. I wouldn't trade my one Franklin for ten Emmons. Wish I could afford a second one!

Since I got my Rains, my Emmons stays setup in my music room. That was one reason I wanted a new steel. I'm more likely to sit down and play for an hour on my way to the rest room.

Steve-

I'll trade you my wonderful 1995 Carter D-10 for that crummy old Emmons and that VHT 2/90/2 you've got laying around. Straight up, I'll pay for shipping both ways too.

Steve,
I noticed Buddy has got a new Zum. How do the the Rains guitars compare with the Zums in your opinion. Nick

Nick,
I'm not a big Zum fan. I think they are great guitars, just not for me. I bought a really nice Zum a few years back, played it about a month, and traded it for an Emmons, which I later sold. Bruce is a nice fellow and an expert builder, I'm just not on the Zum bandwagon.

Seriously, I think the Rains guitars are a huge "sleeper". I think they rank with the best, if not the best guitar made.

If one judges their instrument by what (insert big name player here) is currently playing, that's cool... but they need to be aware that many of these folks get "sweetheart deals" to play these guitars. This is not aimed at anyone in particular, but is just a comment.

I will have to agree about the Rains. I too went from an Emmons L Lagrande to a Rains. Most all builders are making a good guitar, but I have played nothing that sounds as good as my Rains.....nooooooooothing.

I think of my Emmons as my grand piano; IMO, I've never heard a better psg. Maybe it's the wood or who knows what or Ron's skill? I remember an argumentative boy, in my childhood telling me, "my daddy can shoot a rifle further than your daddy". Of all past quotes in my life I'll never forget that one.

Steve,
I'm happy for you that you found a steel that sounds great to your ears ..... I heard a lot about the Rains, and wanted a U-12 Rains , but it's not in the cards I guess...
Anyway, you mentioned that you are not a Zum person ... I'm of the belief that NOTHING BUT NOTHING sounds like an Emmons P/P ....It has a unique tone ...The Zum I had was a BIG, warm , full , round tone ... More full sounding than the P/P ....This is not to say that the P/P sounded any better or worse , just a different tone .....With this said, what is it that the Rains sounds like ?.....Is it closer in tone to a P/P than it is the Zum ? ...I know tone is a hard thing to explain, but please give it a shot ....Thanks for your time, and good luck with your new Rains !...A Special steel is hard to find !!.....Jim
