I was pretty sure it was Sol Hoopii, then thought maybe it was Andy Iona, now pretty sure it's Sam Koki! Truly I have no idea! Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Really phenomenal segment starts about 20 mins in. He’s playing a frypan and they do the backing music for around 10 mins.

Here’s the movie on YouTube:

I’m not totally sure this is Sol because supposedly he left Hollywood in 1938. This was filmed at Catalina Island.

Yeah I really can't tell who it is, but that would make sense! Didn't he get gifted the very first frypan ever?

Yeah, maybe Andy Iona, later you hear him playing the same song (which I can't identify) and he's doing that buzzy pick-by-the-bridge thing that I've heard Andy Iona do a lot before (like the B section on I'm Getting Sentimental)...

I’m certain that is Andy’s playing but I’m not sure if that is him in the video. Wasn’t he missing his thumb on his picking hand?

Yeah, I heard he used a backwards pick on the third finger for brush strokes...and the hairstyle with a part in the middle? The music isn't in sync with the video anyway. Andy Iona was definitely a Hollywood fixture...I love his playing, wish there was more of it available these days.

I think this steel player might be Sam Koki, by comparing various stills and Soundies. Part in the middle is correct. Anyhow, the moral of this story is never try to two-time those Island-Babes.

You might be right, the player definitely looks quite a bit like him, I don't know his style but if this is him what we hear in the movie he sounds very much like Andy. On the other hand, I am sometimes quite surprised how close Lani McIntires steel player Bob Nichols sound to Dick McIntire. And we all know that this is not easy ; ) !
