I have a Magnatone Lyric (D-eight) with solid shaft 500k vol and tone pots that are still scratchy after a couple of rounds on Deoxit spraying and working 'em back n' forth. Were the originals audio or linear taper? What would be the best choice of replacement pots?

Volume pots are normally an audio or log taper, whereas tone pots are normally a linear taper.

Walter, for what it's worth, I've been using a linear taper pot in my volume pedals for years. A long time ago I got tired of hunting for the ever more scarce 500K ohm A-B pots with the audio taper. I switched to the same pot with a linear taper and never looked back. High quality, linear taper pots with the correct shaft length and ohmage are far more readily available.

When I first made the switch I'd mentioned it here on the Forum. That declaration raised the hackles on some of our Forum brethren. I didn't mind, I'd donned my flame-retardant clothing and carried on. Laughing

The only caveat with the linear taper is with your foot. You have to train your foot to move more slightly and accurately. Once that's accomplished (for me it was relatively short period of time) you'll have no difficulty with volume control. In fact, it will probably help eliminate exaggerated volume swells for those with that problem. Also, the precision you'll develop with your right foot may help you set your volume if you need to take your foot off to use both feet on the pedals, as with the C6th tuning or universal tuning.

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn
