Andy, I'm sorry for the loss of your son. Just a few days ago I was browsing all the pictures on your website thinking that the people over there seemed to be living a happy life.

Thank you to each and every one of you who sent good thoughts and such kindness.
It means so much to us.

We had over 200 seats at the funeral on Sunday, but that was not enough for all the family and friends that came. It was packed with those friends standing at the back and the overflow into the hall.

Many got up to reminisce and sometimes had me laughing and other times brought on the tears. I can only say if tears weighed much I'd be down to my desired 40 pound less weight after this week.

Because he will be entombed at the family plot in the Mekong Delta, Viet Nam we had to have him cremated. Something I was dreading, but when offered to be the one to push the three buttons to start the furnace... Better me than a stranger.
He was born at home and I remember laying with him on my chest the day he came to us so it seemed fitting to be the one to see him leave too.
Pushing those three buttons was one of the hardest things I'd ever done including my two tours losing friends in the old South Viet Nam. Seeing his 8 year old son, 15 year old daughter and 13 year old younger brother crying so hard wrenched my heart a few notches more.

I also rode in the hurst with the driver and Buddy. She was now working at that funeral home doing many jobs including embalming and preparing people for viewing. She had gone to school with Buddy and Sam, knew them both well, and with tears in her eyes said it was the hardest thing she had ever had to do. We both shared tears and memories of him during to long procession drive to the crematory.

It also turned out the the police motorcycle escort was led by Officer Coco who was also a friend of Buddy.

The songs "Will the circle be unbroken" and "I'll fly away" often ran through my head. I'll need to work those up on my steel when I get home. This was the first time I've traveled in many trips without my Clinesmith lap steel.

Once again, Thanks to you all for the kindness. I would answer each and every one, but it is just too difficult right now. Just know your thoughts and prayers were so very welcome.

Andy, I am sorry to be so late in commenting on this, but I don't check this section as often as I should. I am very sorry to hear this about your son. And I know your pain, for 11 years ago, I lost my son (age 33), my only child. And you are so right, there are no words to describe the pain and the emptiness you feel. My heart goes out to you, and I wish there was something I could say or do to help ease your pain, but there is not. This is something that you don't get over, you just learn to live with it. You will see him again. Take care my friend.

Thank you Eddie,
I also don't usually go on that thread very often.
Believe me, your messages as well as so many others is a huge help.
The fact you have had this happen to you also, my guess is you also found it far more difficult than other deaths of family and close friends?

Last Sunday there was a ceremony at the buddhist temple in Portland where his ashes will stay for three years before we take his remains to Viet Nam. But for all that I didn't feel like Buddy Lee was there in that urn.

It was a nice ceremony and the monk was a very nice down to earth kind of guy. Without us having started a conversation he said something to me when we were alone that really seemed to hit true. He told me Buddy was with me always where ever I go... I'd been feeling like I've been talking to him in my head often since it happened. Not sure if it's real or not, but it always seems like he is answering me in the responding thoughts that just seem to come to me.

Now and then it seems like I'm getting used to this new reality, but then something will happen or be said and it again feels just like the day I got the news. I sure do miss his physical presence. Just don't know. Today is three weeks.
My lady and I are going home to Saigon on Wednesday.
Thanks again,
Andy

Andy, my warmest condolences to you and your family on the passing of your son, Buddy.

I think the monk was right. Buddy is always with you, separated physically but not spiritually. I hope you find some comfort in that.

Been two months now and still there is something several times each day to remind me of him.

There was a link to this youtube video by one of his cousins today on facebook.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rAbJSiwU4s&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR3N1gAH_Cowu3QO3L3C5r4dEUT4f_rua0P-sGJr3Z0Or4s7ejZUkDDeIXk

Think I'll just share these photos also... A glimpse of his life and then not comment any more.

My new Tattoo.

Seems like his life was way too short, but he sure left behind so many people who really loved him.

Andy, I am shocked and so, so sorry to hear about Buddy. Although I never met him in person, we did speak on the phone a couple of times in July about some MOP sets I bought. I was super impressed with his attitude, professionalism, and generally pleasant demeanor. I’m sure he will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to you.

Thank You Mark,
He came here to Saigon for a couple of weeks of R&R in mid August.
Had a wonderful two weeks and left very happy and positive about the future.

I keep thinking of the morning I saw him and my grandson off to the airport and wonder what I could have said or done if I knew he'd be gone from us in 48 hours???

Anyway, thank you for your thoughts.
I'll be a long time adjusting to this.
Best wishes,
Andy

I just heard this song (Vince Gill - Go Rest High On That Mountain) for the first time last week.
It is so fitting to our loss five months ago. His loss still hits in the gut a few times each day.
I learned the song, but not sure I could ever sing it in public.
I'd said I'd have no more to say and here I am anyway...
I have started to work it out on the lap steel.
Not much to it as far as the melody goes, but emotionally it's got everything and more.

Vince Gill broke down on the Opry stage singing that one at George Jones funeral.
Music is powerful stuff.

Hi Brian,
Indeed, yes I'd heard that as well as the one I Linked too.
It's a difficult one for me to play and sing bringing up so much emotion.
Fit's our situation so well. Seems almost like it was written for Buddy Lee.
Thank you for your kind thoughts,
Best wishes,
Andy

Just saw this post today.
I did see you for a moment at the show.
We came for a month to attend the sjamboree, but on the way back to Oregon everything started closing down for the Corona19. By the time we got to Oregon even Viet Nam had closed it's boarders. We have been stuck here ever since waiting for a flight home. Not sure when we might get home again?
Who knows, maybe we'll still be here next March and see you at that show?

If things get back to normal we will come again next March, but I don't want to risk getting stuck away from home again so soon.
Best wishes,
Andy
