trying to figure out how to use the 1st and 2nd strings? any help would be appreciated thanks.

you could look thru the Winston/Keith book, e.g. the backup chapter.

In the most basic sense, strings 1 and 2 are there so you can play the whole major scale without moving the bar (string 1 is the 2nd degree of the scale, string 2 is the 7th degree of the scale). These strings also allow you to play a straight 5 chord without moving the bar.

These answers are right! My unsolicited advice would be to not try to figure out how to use them. Laughing They'll be there when you need them. There's no need to try to find a job for them. In fact, making a point of using them could create a bad habit of being stubborn about changing your fret position.
