Howdy friends, I just got a pair of 12" speakers in
home made enclosures. After examining them I found out they are 16 ohms. My question is can you push them with power heads that have 8 or 4 ohm outputs without damaging the power amps. We used them last week at our weekly jam and they sounded ok, but I just wanted to make sure they didn't ruin the guys amplifier. As always any information would be greatly appreciated. Tenn.Lee

Run both of them together in parallel wiring that will give you 8 Ohms

No problem if they are connected to a Solid State amp. A 16 ohm speaker will draw about half the power compared to an 8 ohm speaker and about a quarter the power compared to a 4 ohm speaker.

No problem. You will just lose a little volume compared to a 4 or 8 ohm speaker. You can go up in ohms from your amps ohm rating. but not down. An easy way to remember is think of your shoe size. You can put your foot into a larger shoe but not into a smaller shoe.

Thank you forum members for the replies. Georg I was just wondering why you couldn't use a tube power head like the old showman I have. Not that I would. Tenn.Lee

Speaker impedance vs tube amps depends on what load (impedance) the tube amp - specifically its output transformer - is set up for. Not a good idea to have too much of an imbalance there, even if it may seem to work fine in most cases.
