I’m happy to announce that after a 6 month hiatus, I’ve returned to playing my steel, and will be giving 2 concerts in the near future.
The first one is in Pasadena, at the Church if Truth, 690 East Orange Grove. The concert will take place on Sunday, June 30, at 2 PM. There is a $10.00 fee, which will go to the church, and I will have CDs for sale.
On this concert, I will be joined by Chuck Herrbach on the flute, pianists Christian Dubeau and Christine Lee, and multi-instrumentalist Jean Sudbury. I have admired Jean for years and am thrilled that she will be joining me for a couple of pieces.
The program will include music by Debussy, Stravinsky, Fauré, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov and 16th century composer Michael Praetorius as well as some pop classics. Nor exactly your typical steel guitar music.
I hope some of you within driving distance will attend the concert.

Hey Mike, I'm in LA and I'm disappointed I can't make this, it sounds fantastic! Glad to hear someone is doing this kind of music on the pedal. _________________ Guacamole Mafia - acoustic harmony duo

That sounds really interesting, Mike - all favourite composers of mine! I still aspire to do something like that if I can ever acquire enough technique. Good luck with the show(s)! _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Ian, I've recorded 3 CDs of this kind of music. The 2 web sites in my signature contain about 90 minutes from the CDs. You can hear my forays into the world of classical music by visiting the sites.
The "secret" of my success, if you can call it that, is that I can read music, and I urge every other steel guitarist to learn how.
I've written a short article on how to read music on the E9 neck, which I will send for free to anybody who asks for it. My method is not quick and easy. It requires some serious effort, but it works.
Please submit all requests for the article via E-mail and not through private messages. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Hey Mike, OK great, I will put the 7/24 show on my calendar and show up.
I'm located in Westchester near LAX airport, so Fairfax and Pico is not that far.
One thing I've always wondered about playing classical on a pedal steel is that the E9 was set up for very melodic, country music -- not for general music like a piano -- so it seems that certain things that would be very easy to play on a piano would be really difficult on a pedal steel.
I'll email you for the article you mentioned. And see you at the show! _________________ Guacamole Mafia - acoustic harmony duo

George, every piece is different. Some work really well on the steel, others are impossible.
Mozart and the other great masters used the same major and minor chords used in country music. A C chord is a C chord regardless of whether it's part of a Beethoven symphony or a Ray Price shuffle. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
