Hello,
According to the stage one setup page, it is possible to lower string 2 from D# to C#, with the caveat that no half-stop setup is available so it is an either / or choice (between C# and D).
I've recently noticed that some licks I'd like to play have the whole step drop on string 2, so I tried to tune it that way, but I can't get the drop low enough. The tuning adjustment for lowers, on the stage one, is a little hex head on the end plate, and I'm able to back it out beyond where it makes any difference in the pitch change, and the knee lever still doesn't quite get a whole step down. It's more like .75 steps down.
Does anybody have experience with this on the stage one? I have a feeling this involves adjusting the red nylon tuning nut, but the manual specifically says not to adjust those "EVER".

Also, I just tried to tune RKL to raise 1 to G# (instead of G), with similar results. The knee lever doesn't quite raise it enough, so I adjust the nylon on string 1, but then it starts (I suppose) pushing on the finger and affecting the open tuning of the string.
It's like "there's not enough slack" to work with. I'm sure it's an ID-10T error on my part.

Check under the guitar there may be a lower stop that can be adjusted to allow the 2nd string to lower to C#.

It seems that you need to increase the travel of the knee levers.
I've never seen a Stage One, so I don't know where the travel adjustment screws are |

I too have never seen a Stage One, but I would think you could make a physical half stop under the guitar like this:

Down about half way on the page. Michael Yahl also has one for round shafts. Look under the MSA category. The Mullen is for hex cross shafts. I don't know who makes them for square cross shafts.

I did this on my stage one when I had it. In order for you to get enough travel you have to move the rod to a different hole in the changer finger which requires you to take the rod loose from the bellcrank. It is held in place by a locking washer. If you contact Doug, he will tell you how to do it. It is really not difficult, you just have to be careful not to mess up the washer so you can reuse it.

The Stage One has round cross shafts. This looks like a pretty cool idea. I get plenty of use from the half step drop on string 2, but having both half and whole might be fun too. Might be worth asking Doug if it would work. |

You have to change the location of the rod to get more travel.
Remove the nylon tuning nut and washer.
GENTLY pry the black metal retaining disc side to side and off the pull rod. Flatten it with a hammer to re-use.
The rod needs to go in the hole furthest away from the bellcrank cross shaft, and closest to the changer shaft. This puts the rod in a position such that it is passing through the changer finger at a severe angle. You will want to make a bend in the rod before it passes through the changer finger so as to straighten it going through the changer finger.
Re-install the black disc, washer and tuning nut and tune it. As always, the set screw above the window for the nylon tuners is used to regulate the pitch of the lowered note. |
