This topic has probably been discussed before but maybe someone can add to this. Just what is the advantage of having the D and E right next to each other as opposed to having no B? Or maybe I should have both changes. I do not have this change on a C6 type pedal, I just do it by letting off on my Eb lower lever and hitting the lever that drops the E way down to D. Just seems quite natural to me. I know the voicing is a little different if you have the tonic and Dom7 both in the chord, but I never found it to be that essential. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

Due to a complexity of my weird setup, the B>D shared the same lever as a very fundamental change. I use this fundamental lever as frequently as the E & F levers and I was shredding B strings as incidental damage (that is, a string that should never fail between string changes was letting go). I got rid of the raise and use only the E>D lower. I occasionally wish I had the voicing of E & D together but there are workarounds using string 7 & 8, down two frets.
In a perfect world I would have access to the B raise. I'm waiting. |

I have a weird setup on my U12 with the E-D next to the B pedal. Its great there for both E9 and B6 playing.. But it reverses the P5 P6 order for 6 playing which screws me up when I switch to a standard D10 C6 setup.
If I had to do it again, I would have it on a knee just because of the muscle memory issues. Seems my feet train different than my knees.
Ultimately. As I delve more into pure E9 and C6 the more I like the D10. Evolving needsI guess. I loved learning on a Uni though. |

The string 8-D is mainly for P6 of the B6th tuning (with E's lowered).
The string 9-D is mainly for E9th playing when you want the E9th String-9-D note.
Some folks think having a dedicated D-string in the string-9 position is an advantage, mainly because alot of E9th specific Tab and Chord Charts show that string-9 is a D, and string-10 is a B. |

I have the B to D on a pedal and it’s lots of fun in Ext E9. I have it near the volume pedal so I can hit is in tandem with the AB pedals.
I do envision a steel with fewer strings, for simplicity. The D string would go and be replaced by string 8 E to D, either on the string 2 lower lever, or as a an extra stop on the standard E lower lever.
I’ve seen someone on the forum with a E-D#-D lever and I’m encouraged that it works well.
When I go back to 10 string, I miss the low G# string more than the low E. I’d like to try G#-B-E from the bottom up. With E to D lever on Str 8. And a special pedal that would lower G# to low E. I know the string will handle it.

The way I look at the universal is as a combination of E9 and B6 in one place. I say that because some see it as a more fluid setup. If you want to bring your C6 repertoire with you, you need the uninterrupted grips that a 9th D string would get in the way of. That's only a problem if you've played E9 for years and have a ton of licks that use that separate D; I'm a relative newcomer and don't have that baggage. I lower 8 to D on P6 and raise B to D on the same lever that would be D to C# on regular E9, and it has the same function when combined with the A pedal. I sometimes use the 8th string lower in E9 if there's a progression that goes E-D#-D like E, Emaj7, E7. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

JOHN,
That's pretty much my setup now on a keyless S10 I have. I don't have a "large C6 repertoire" so it works ok for me. I doin't have many set pieces,I just play songs with singers and sing some myself. My C6 /A6 / B6 stuff is mostly non-pedal.
Thinking about getting a single 11 with a simple 4+4 setup just extending the idea with a low E string. Still with a E-D lever on 8. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

I don't play a U12, just ext E9 and standard 10 string E9.
I play some licks, and stuff where I would love the E string ( lower to D. Currently I have to move my thumb to string 9, and then move it back to string 8. I would prefer to have 8 lower to D to allow sliding into those notes.
I may remove the D to C# on string 9 on the 2nd string lever, and lower 8 to D instead. Or I may just add a pull to that lever. I don't thing having string 8 at D and string 9 at C# will cause any issues.
B to D wouldn't serve any purpose to me.
That smiley is supposed to be the number 8. I wish this software would stop doing that. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
