Just got this "Thing" in the door, saying make a steel guitar out of this.
Body is all aluminum and measures from 1/4" to 1/2" thick. Any opinions...Home made? unfinished commercially made? Any thoughts about the pedal rack and pedals?
Seen from the end where the aprons flare out, could put me in mind of the old Sierra

Bent -
With the beautiful work that you do, you could make that thing sing. And look great as well!

I wonder how stable the tuning will be if the temperature changes _________________ ----------------------------------

I always thought "The Thing" was a roadside attraction at a truck stop along I-10 between El Paso and Tucson...

I have three Sierra's and the temperature doesn't affect them anymore than my traditional built steel.
The Sierras have a maple deck attached to the aluminum deck...and maple necks (of course attached to the maple deck). The keyless head and changer are attached to the maple deck also. This construction method limits any temperature changes.
Looks like a great project!!! |

I've been there! A sign at the front of this 'museum', filled with treasures, says that at the end of the tour there is the staff car
used by [a European fascist dictator in the '30s and '40s whose name can't be used here] and on it a sign saying "... but the thing is, we don't know!"
The thing of it is, I had an aluminum-bodied Carpsteel (Gary Carpenter) that was half the thickness of the one pictured and had negligible 'cabinet drop' and great tuning stability. Best of luck! (I recommend an appropriate pickup, as mine had, an Alumitone; very smoooth and balanced.) |
