i've wanted a fender VI for a while and realized that i could get that on the low strings of the c6 neck. turn the reverb up, add electronic vibrato and play with a thick guitar pick and you got it. now you can play the galveston solo by glen campbell, soldier boy, ghost riders and lots of twangy ventures things. another tool in your bag of tricks. i'm sure this has been done before but it's new to me.

I've been swiping Pete Anderson baritone licks for years, but I had no idea what a Fender VI is.

The old "Fender Bass VI Guitar" (bass six), essentially a custom Jaguar tuned down an octave. It was popular during the days that the "Tic-Tac" bass sound was all the rage. |

I made an octave lower bass/guitar. (a six string guitar, one octave lower) You'll see heads turn when you use it. It sounds great but make sure you don't get in the bass player's turf. Cut the low end way back. I consider it a studio secret weapon. Before I had one, I used a regular bass guitar, with low end turned down, to either over dub the lead guitar or by it self, as Glen did in Wichita Lineman. I also consider the high strung acoustic guitar, used to ad a "what is that"? ear perker to the tune, a secret weapon. Lots of steel players think the fuzz solo on Marty Robbins' Don't Worry was played on the low strings of the C6 neck but was actually a bass six (the Danelectro version though, which predated the Fender). |
