I only own a couple of lap steels. Trust me, having never played any kind of guitar a 6 string lap steel is plenty for me. I was looking at pictures of pedal steels. (not to buy, just curious) What exactly are those nylon or plastic tube things on the end of the guitar and how exactly are they used.

Thanks in advance for answering a question from a total novice.

They are threaded onto a rod that eventually hooks up to the pedals and levers. Turning them shortens or lengthens the amount that the pedals/levers pull the string.

Jon Light's description of what those nylon tuners actually do is slightly incorrect as they do not shorten or lengthen the amount that the pedals/levers pull the string. They do however adjust the pitch of the string when the pedal or lever is fully engaged.

If you dont have enough length on the pull it will be impossible to tune a raise properly with the nylon tuners, because if string was in tune open and you engange pedal/lever fully, then adjust raise with nylon tuner to the correct (raised) pitch, when you release the pedal/lever your open string will now be sharp and you can not correct that unless the length of the pull itself is increased.

Shorten or lengthen the amount that pedals/levers pull the string are done at the opposite end of the rods w the nylon tuners, and is where one can syncronise the pull on different strings if there is more than one string beeing pulled by that pedal/lever.

Changing the pitch of the string is done by lengthening or shortening the amount the string is pulled. Sometimes the wording may be misinterpreted but if you think about it, Jon's description is entirely correct.

I know what Jon ment, and most of the time the nylon tuners behave exactly as Jon said
Simplified, entirely correct.

Just be aware of the difference when 2 or more pulls isnt starting and stopping at the same time, because that means adjusting the length of the pull in order to correct the problem and I wish that it could be solved w the nylon tuners but it isnt.

Very true. Sometimes balancing the pulls can be a little tricky.

Bill - I can see that you have lust in your heart for pedal steel. That sassy little 3 x 5 Encore would melt your resolve in an instant. The road to pedal steel addiction is littered with lap steel guitars. The medical community believes that lap steel itself has certain clinical benefits, it stimulates dopamine production and pleasure centers in the brain, relaxing the user, but lap steel is what is known as a "gateway drug" that has proven time and again to lead to hard core pedal steel addiction from which there is rarely any escape, even by those with wills of iron. You are in greater danger than you think, friend, don't stare at that Encore too long if you're serious about avoiding hard core pedal steel addiction. Before you know it, it will be too late, and you'll be just another pedal steel addiction statistic.

You are one funny guy Richard! I got "BILL" power! Very Happy
I visited this guy yesterday. He is only about 10 miles from me. I never knew he existed. He has a nice selection of vintage lap steels. He has NO PSG'S. He told me, early on in his business he came across a Pedal Steel and thought he would learn it. I think it had 3 pedals and 2 knee levers. He said, I got so confused, I told my wife the only way I would be able to learn this is to put it in a room with me, lock the door, slip my food under the door for the next two months and leave me alone. He is quite a character. Here is his site. Check out the lap steels and other stuff.
