Dating a Fender Stringmaster:
Mine has the tone wheels and brown case. It has the same case color as my Brown Fender Pro covering.
What is the best way to determine the year made?
regards,

If the case is the same as your Fender Pro then (assuming it's the original case) it's 50's and should have a pencil date in the tuner pans.
Pictures would help too. How many necks does it have? What about the selecter switches - push button or Telecaster style? |

When he said his Fender Pro, I assumed he meant a Fender Dual Professional steel (i.e. the one with the trap pickups). |

He said "Brown Fender Pro covering". To me, that means amp covering, for example, black tolex, brown tolex, Oxblood, tweed, etc. on his Fender Pro amp. I could be wrong though. He really needs to post a few pictures so we can see what he's referring to. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Brown tolex case would be early 1960s, about 1960-62... |
I think Doug nailed it. "Brown amps" refer to the face plate color and circuitry from that era, not the tolex color. (For ex. blond tolex piggy backs from the same era are still "brown"). Brown pros had the tan tolex as Doug points out, the same as the Stringmaster cases would of the same period.
Personally, unless I had a good reason to want the exact date, I would leave it be. It's early 60s. The year doesn't matter as far as value. |
