Hello there!! I am extremely new to the steel guitar, but want to become an extremely awesome player!! Particularly a blues style player. Did some research online for lessons in the Tulsa, OK area, and came up short. Stumbled across this site and thought I'd try here!! I think I am posting in the correct forum..

Please let me know if you- or if you know anyone who does- provide lap steel lessons.
Thank you!! Hope to hear from you soon.

Abigail, consider contacting John Ely, a professional player and instructor, and a great teacher/musician. He teaches via Skype, used to play for Asleep at the Wheel, and is a member of the Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. You won't find a better teacher; he specializes in non-pedal steel guitar.
His website is http://www.hawaiiansteel.com

(For the sake of clarity, I point out that, although my name is also John Ely, he and I are two different people. Seriously, it just happens that there are two of us named John Ely who play steel guitar. He's a pro player and instructor, I'm just another amateur who plays).
Good luck with steel guitar.
John

Haha. Wow, that is hilarious. As I was first reading that I was thinking why is he talking about himself like that?? Ha. Then I got to the second half! I will definitely check out his website. That is so cool he's a hall of fame member, and teaches!! and on Skype to boot! Awesome. So excited, thank you John!!!
So which one is the original John Ely???

Ha, I hope so Gary! We'll see..

The original John Ely lives in Ely (actually Virginia), Minnesota.
The town was named for a relative. Very Happy

Yep, Erv, you're right, the "other" John Ely lives up in northern MN, and is related to the founders of Ely, MN.
We do know each other, and we have a deal, whichever one of us croaks first, the other one of us has to put on a show called "A Steel Guitar Tribute to the Late John Ely, Starring John Ely".
Good luck Abigail. Connect with John, you won't regret it.
John
