He's a new one to me. I've contacted him and asked him for more information. He doesn't list new prices that I can see, but his "used" instruments were offered for $1,250 USD.
Beautiful instruments. I'd love to hear how they sound.

OH MY GOD!! George Benson on lap steel! It will be curious to find out if he really ever does anything with it. All us standard guitar players know what the learning curve is like (steep!). You really have to *want* to play this instrument and put the time in.
I was thinking about GB and what the connection might be to this instrument maker and it dawned on me the Benson has (or at least had last time I heard) a house on Maui so the connection with the Maui Institute may have had something to do with it. |

I am a long time steel player , a Jeff Newman Student since 1980 and learned
the C6th from Buddy Emmons ,as well as the Paul Franklin Tapes , etc , as
most of you have done as well. I started playing the lap style in 1994 and
have been building a few in the last years ,
I am now a student and provider of lap steels for The Hawaiian Music
Institue of Maui (Henry Kalealoha Allen) i have lap and stand up steels.
My Most expensive models are in the 1200.00 range and the laps go for the
750.00 area. the used items are actually priced at 450.00usd.
more to come on the web site , and i plan to join the forum but will need to
snail mail my fees etc .

ps from Andy: Bill, I think Benson is a good friend of Henry Allen (who also plays Jazz guitar) so that would explain the connection. |

I believe George only sells new guitars and the reference to USD means the price in U.S. Dollars.
His website has been available in the LINKS part of the FORUM for quite some time.

RE: George Piburn and the Georgeboards: I've known George for a few years. In fact were were in a band together when he made his first axe. That one was cool but he's come a long way since. I spent a few hours at George's today, looking at all of his stuff and picking. I even got to play the George Benson double neck (smile). All I can say is "wow!" These are beautiful sounding guitars, with georgeous wood. I played the double, a single, and the lap model. All nice with a similar tone. The guitars had tons of sustain and that good old single coil tone. The intonation was spot on. George has some good inovative ideas on how to build these things, yet he is in tune with tradition. On the other hand, he doesn't want to build 'em like anyone else does, and his guitars are unique in many ways. BTW, George is an excellent picker, and he probably didn't realize I was stealing licks from him!

I've actually seen Mr. Benson play steel at a small Jazz club here on the Big Island...Henry Allen,(Steel guitarist from Maui)...was backing him up on regular guitar, I believe George was here on vacation and was using Henry's D8, while Henry was using Georges Guitar...(Ibanez)..I have NO IDEA of what tuning he was using...but he's quite a musician...It was a great evening of music..as I remember they played mostly if not all standards...I don't remember any typical "Hawaiian" songs
