Hello all,
If you are on the lookout for another steel what perameters do you use in making your selection.
Do you.....
1 Go for a name brand which is being used by a major player.
2 The price and availability.
3The weight.
4 Listen to the advice of a steel playing friend.
5 Go for new or used
And so on.
I would be interested in your ideas.
Best regards
Billy

Weight, Lighter than my Bud
Number of strings S-14, so I can tune up ANYTHING I want
Power, enough levers 7+5 to get most any practical set of changes.
Ease of working unter the hood. Since I must do it myself.
A good used price.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 17 May 2005 at 11:13 PM.] |

For me, several factors combined. I would not have a guitar that did not please my ears, eyes, back and bank account. My Emmons original has filled all those for manys years( except for my back ). My new Carter has all that plus lightning fast delievery.
With a few back surgerys behind me the weight factor was the reason I started shopping.

Well, it has to be affordable and available, that's a given. Outside of that, just try a few and see which one you think feels, plays, looks, and sounds good...to you!
There is no "best", except in someone's mind. |

Billy - like me your a 10000 miles away from any steel shows or conventions so you have to rely on advise, and what you see on the internet, unless someone has something you like in Scotland, or the UK. I bought a ZUM last year, sight unseen and was not disappointed - obviously they live up to their high reputation. I also replaced my old MCI with a new Carter, which arrived about 2 and a half weeks ago. The Carter is a real beaut as well, light, easy to play and sounds awesome. Once again I didn't have the luxury of seeing one in the flesh, or trying it out - but what impressed me was the support (via their website), and also Ann Fabian rang me at home in NZ to make sure everything was ok with the order before they started building the guitar. And obviously the Carters have a strong following when you look at who plays them. Good luck with your choice mate.

That an easy one. CARTER! Just kidding. My last three guitars have been Carters. There's several excellent guitars on the market. I like the Carter products because there easy to change something around on if you want to. There lightweight also and are beautiful guitars. Plus when you call Carter you can get a response quickly. Of course if I could afford it I would have one of each brand made sitting in my office. |

By the way Billy, once i had confirmed my order with Carters it only took them 3 and a half weeks to build and ship !! You can't ask for better than that. And it took about a week to ship from Texas to NZ, right to my front door!
