Sounds like the ever fabulous "Analani E" to me.
I don't have that version and would like to know the artist.
Edit: Joe, I think you are right. I had frankly never noticed the similarity between those 2 melodies.
But I'd still like to know who it is in George's post. |

It's from the second track on Buddy Emmons album "Steel Guitar" from 1975. The track is actually a medley over 8 minutes long and this would seem to be "That's the Hawaiian in me". Probably his C6 neck then. |

Yep, it's the Big E playing "That's the Hawaiian in Me" from his Steel Guitar album. I always though he played this on a lap steel, but it could have been a pedal steel. He plays dobro in the same medley.
It's in the key of A. The intro chord is E6 (V chord). If you're playing 6-string lap steel, C6 tuning, put your bar on fret 4 and slowly strum across the strings from string 6 to string 1. That matches Buddy's intro chord perfectly. Make sure you're listening to the Emmons version in the original post above, not the Byrd version on Youtube. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

The overall timbre sounds like pedal steel to me though he isn't using the pedals. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

It's Just one Great peace of Steel playing, Takes me back to my stops in the islands while in the Navy. I love that traditional Hawaiian sound. |

I guess we'll never know if it's C6 or A6 since so many identical patterns can be played on both tunings at different frets. Of course, the high 5th tone on A6 could be important for some licks. I'm betting on C6, and probably played on a pedal steel, as Andy said, no pedals used. The sustain and tone sound more like a pedal steel, although for many years I assumed it was a lap steel.
I bought the album in 1975 when it came out. I remember reading a review at the time and the reviewer said "That's the Hawaiian in Me" was the best song on the record! _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel
