Anyone use an amp stand?

I want to use an amp stand, where the controls are closer to me, and also at an angle where I can see them clearly at a glance. Anyone have any favorites that they can recommend?

There are tons of options, and images on google, homemade, etc. I can build a homemade one, which I may do just for fun anyway...but I post this, because we steelers have different requirements, being seated behind the instrument where we can't get out easily and need to have the amp at arm's length.

I'm guessing that a lot of the options I see online are geared towards a guitarist who has more freedom of movement...

Comments/suggestions?

thru the years I have used several amp stands and even have a few tucked away somewhere. Tripods where they lean back about 6" off the ground and stands where they sit maybe 24 inches off the ground, also tilted back , they all seemed ok and worked fine.

These days I use a $3 Tupperware step stool !

I've used one like this for a long time, until I got my Dannny Bently NV112 fiber Case. I now use the case for an amp stand.

Raising the amp gives you a better feel for how loud you are. If its sitting on the floor its basically going "under" you and most tend to play louder as they can't properly hear the amp. I had an Evans amp that had a handle underneath the front and it raised the front slightly, sort of about the same angle as a Fender with the side mounted amp "arms". But that didn't seem to really help.

I generally use the chair I would be sitting on if I didn't have my own seat, although on one date the band had a set of smart black coffee tables!

I have 3 amps stands from Musicians friend. I usually check Musicians friend Stupid Deal of the day and have bought them dirt cheap! I,do use them on stage because I can hear and make any necessary adjustments! You can see 2 of them with my 112's on them.

Thanks guys - all good suggestions.

I like the idea of being angled up so I can easily manipulate the controls. When I played for several years in the 80's, I sat on my amp while I played. Thinking back, I now wonder, was I too loud, too soft...guess it doesn't matter now.

Most of my combo amps are open back, so I need one of the stand types that will accommodate that style of amp. They are reasonably priced enough anyway...

I have had and made several amp stands but have found that the ole wooden, canvas seat, fold up camp stool works as good as anything for me. Probably just a few dollars at WalleyWerld.

I rarely raise the amp though I usually have it angled up to me. I have an amp stand made from two hinged pieces of angle-cut plywood that raises the entire amp about 4 inches off the floor and angles it, but rarely haul it around.

For years I used the ubiquitous black plastic ashtray wedged under the amp's front edge. Then all the clubs went non-smoking and I lost my wedges so I bought one at Wal-Mart for a buck and carried it in my packseat.

Now I have a Telonics 500 and it has a built in fold-down arm on the cabinet bottom. Cute idea that works.

Way back in the day I remember seeing a Li'l Izzy advert with Jimmy Day's photo and endorsement saying "I never play a gig without one." I mentioned it to him and he laughed. Then he stuck the Little Izzy under his Evans amp and said "See? The perfect angle." Then he laughed some more. Laughing

I do miss Jimmy a lot. Smile

Ahhh, the vaunted milk-crate. Everyone has used 'em. Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Hopping. Sturdy, light, doubles as a carry-all, and is tall enough that tilt isn't needed. I'm putting mine back into the rotation.
