Last night, I was fortunate enough to see Mike Neer do material from his Steelonious record.
His playing is so tasteful not to mention his band was also killing. He was so in tune, using insane slants and strong lines that avoid "steel guitar convention" cliche. His modern approach to harmony and phrasing is so great. He doesnt let the instrument play him. A real inspiration.
Buy that man's record if you cant see it live. _________________ Http://www.jonnylam.com

I'll re-post what I posted on FB......
"A wonderful evening of innovative music it was.......the band was amazing....while Mike's technical ability is over the top, his musical ideas are what really shines through......it's one thing to enjoy and appreciate the Steelonious cd,....it's quite another experience to see this music performed live....."
Those of us who were fortunate to know our deceased beloved Forum Brother, Steinar Gregertsen, remember his motto...."Play to express, not impress".....Mike does exactly that hands down....but you cannot help being impressed by how proficient he is with regard to technique....technique being the tool used to accomplish this particular musical story line...... |

Thanks for the thread, Jonny! And thanks to everyone who came out. The vibe was amazing and the crowd listened to every note, it seemed. It's my favorite club to play and that's why I chose it for our first gig. We haven't played together since the last day of recording, May 12! We had a little rehearsal an hour before the gig with a new keyboard player, who is a monster, too.
I have one tip for musicians, and this is the most important one: Always play with musicians who make you sound better!
And about all that other stuff, I consider myself a modern old-fashioned player with a different record collection. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Love the CD and really bummed that I couldn't make it to Mike's gig. I'm not on Facebook; is there any other way to access the video? |

So cool, the album being played live. Those really competent players do make you sound 'better.' Something about the live experience. |
