His tone and vibrato are so recognizable! I had never heard this before but I would have known the steel player immediately.

How many players can you truly recognize in just one note? It's gotta be almost the world's shortest list but you can do so with Santo.

I think by the time this album was recorded Santo was playing his Stringmaster. He played a Custom (w/trap pickups) on Sleep Walk. It's interesting that he got basically the same tone from both guitars, in spite of the very different pickups on the two guitars.

Yes, in 1959 he was playing his Fender Custom (T-8 with trap. pickups). He recorded "Sleep Walk" with that guitar. A few months later he switched over to a triple neck Stringmaster.
S&J's Beatles Hits album was released in 1964, long after Santo switched over to his Stringmaster. My point was that his tone on the Beatles Hits album (Stringmaster) is almost exactly like his tone on his first record, Sleep Walk (Dual Pro w/trap. pickups). Different guitars with completely different pickups, but as always, the sound is in the Player.

I was agreeing with you Doug. The tone is in the hands not the guitar.
