curly is one of the very few players that, when grabbing handfuls of chords, every note had a specific intent and purpose. incredible like no other. |

I've been a Curly Chalker fan ever since I heard his "Big Hits on Big Steel" Album in 1968.
I saw Curly play in person at the 1969 DJ convention in Nashville.
I feel so fortunate to have seen him play at Scotty's Convention many times through the years.
Has anyone noticed that his steel tone bar is blunt on the tip & does not have a full radius.

Check that ending out. Sounds like an intro to a Doug Jernigan song. Curly is just so fantastic. |

Does anyone know why Curly's steel seems to have the ball-nose partially cut off?
It may even be that he has a different profile on the end of the steel. |

You nailed it Joachim. Although Doug wrote his instrumental years later, goes to show ya great minds think alike. |

Thank you George. I've just noticed that Doug's lick is in F, while Curly is in C. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I am reminded of the great work he did in the album with Joe Venuti, "S'wonderful." Unique, tasteful, virtuosic. A master. |

My good friend Bruce Thomas bought that MSA off of Curly in the late 1970's. He had it a couple of years. It was a great Steel. I love the Wilburn Brother's Show. What a band. I wish they were available on DVD, I'd buy the whole set. |

I didn't hear any steel guitar on that cut! I haven't listened to that album in a long time, but I remember being disappointed in how little Curly played on it. |

For years I never cared for Chalker. The main reason was Hee Haw never really showcased the talent he was. One day I was watching a video where he played a steel show. Man he was burning that steel guitar up. After that day Curly Chalker has been one of my all time favorites. I have been to several steel shows but never got to see him in person and I kick myself for that. |
