Is someone aware of a steeler that recorded Mercy, Mercy, Mercy from Joe Zawinul?
Just curious....

If it's the old Cannoball Adderly tune, Larry "Wimpy" Sasser did it on a Sassy Country cassette that I have. Don't know if it's still available.

Zawinul was Cannonball's keyboardist, and he wrote "Mercy, Mercy". Jow went on to found Weather Report, and he was the composer of "Birdland".

Curly Chalker did a great version of "Mercy Mercy" on his "Counterpoint" album.

Hi Johan,

Dave Ristrim has a great version on his "Crisis at the Theme Park" CD.

Interestingly, I did a European tour with an amazing Austrian artist Hubert von Goisern this summer and I used an old Silverface Twin that had belonged to Joe Zawinul. The amp did some weird things over the course of the tour so it became a running joke about whether Joe was happy that night! Out of respect, I even went to visit his grave in Vienna.

There's an old and great Jeff Newman course called "Music To C6 By" or something like that, where it's tabbed out, and it's a pretty hip version. Haven't seen those courses in many years however.

I learned it note-for-note off the Jeff Newman course in the 70s and played it for years on C6 as an offbeat steel instrumental whenever it fit the gig. I play it now also on Chapman Stick, also note-for-note off Jeff's course where it lays beautifully BTW. Same key too - Bb. Sublime tune.

It lays well on the E9, too. Especially if you play it in C instead of Bb.

Fortunately I have not had to play this boring tune in at least 20 years. I think however that I did have to play Last Date a couple of times, which is the same thing. OTOH if I'm not creative enough to find something interesting to play over a brain-dead chord progression, then it's my own fault.

Earnest, you crack me up. Very Happy I'm reading through this post thinking to myself, "I've had to play that boring thing on 6-string many times and I never saw the charm." The original has some nice solos by Zawinul and Cannonball, but then there's the Buckinghams version...

I saw Weather Report and Joe with Miroslav Vitouš on bass.

They opened up for Buddy Miles would you believe the juxtaposition.

Are there any clips of Birdland done on a psg? Whoa!

Thanks Steve. That was an undertaking. I liked the added flurries at the end. Was hoping for something like that.

And for a different twist, Jerry Douglas recorded Birdland on the Grammy winning Great Dobro Sessions in 1994:
