| The third string pole piece seems to be closer to the string than the other pole pieces. I'm getting a sound that is more shrill. Not to my liking. It looks like I can just use an allen wrench and screw it in away from the string, but it won't turn. I'm afraid I might break something if it's not supposed to turn. Am I on the wrong track? They are very stiff. I think especially when they have never been adjusted--they might be waxed in? Not sure about that. But they require more force than you would think. My allen wrench flexes.
And they are DEFINITELY meant to be adjusted. |

Tommy,

she will send you a special T-Wrench for your pickup at no charge.
You do need to move the 3rd string poles down further away from the strings. You'll see further information for the alignment procedure in the document Jon suggested.
That should fix you up.

| Dave: Thank you, I will do that. I was thinking that maybe the other screw had to be raised up, before the other one could be screwed down away from the string. There must be Locktite on those screws. Hopefully, the special wrench will move them. Thanks, Tommy...... |

there isn't loctite, they just have a lot of stick before they move, then they move pretty easily.
the idea is to raise the third string poles (compared to the thicker strings) to get the volume to be equal to the other strings...
you keep the volume constant while adjusting by moving one pole piece down as you move the other one up...the one closer to the changer is the bright one, closer to the keypad is the mellow one, so use those to get the tone you want while keeping the volume constant.

| Steve: Thanks for your input. And, yes I read everything in that other link about adjusting each strings E.Q.... Maybe it's just that the volume is much louder on the third string. I played this steel out on a job with a band, (and we don't play very loud) I noticed when I played a single string lick, the sound of the third string was much different than what I was expecting. Sort of shrill or harsh and loud, compared to strings 1, 4, and 5...I found myself intentionally cutting the volume pedal back, so it wouldn't hurt peoples ears, if you know what I mean. They're stiff.
I'd crank the changer side of the third string down to tame the highs.
On my MSA, I find I have the changer side closer to the strings on thicker strings and getting lower as I go up, and the neck side slopes the other way.

I finally got it to move. I think it's going to be good now.
The pole piece nearest the fret board was too high. Maybe the E.Q. was okay, but the volume on the third string was just too loud in comparison to the others. Also, I use a .012 gauge on my third string. So maybe that accounts for the added volume. Thanks, Tommy...... |
