If anyone can give be the string gauges for the Kline U-12 and D-10 I'd appreciate it.
My computer was hacked and now I can't retrieve that information. It's been a while since I changed string as they just don't break on either Kline.
Thanks, Steve |

steve, I also found this.
Two Klines
013 015 012 014 017 020p 026w 030w 036w 042w 054w 068w. I have used a 070w and an 072cw on the B but I prefer the taughtness of the 068w. I have also used a 22p on the G#. The sound was not that different to me, but the 020p felt better. I have never cared for a wound G# at all. Always George L Stainless. Their strings are good, and one phone call has them delivered in a couple of days. |

Thanks Bob,
This info on the Kline gauges is most helpful; I appreciate your time. I did a search but found nothing for the S-12.
The thinner gauge 068w string 12 is something I will also try rather than the using the thicker string 070w or 072w strings. Never gave that much thought but the bass should have more zing.
All the best,
Steve |

When I chose the gauges for my homebuilt U12, which has a changer modelled on the Kline, I came up with
0.013
0.015
0.012
0.014
0.017
0.020
0.026W
0.030W
0.038W
0.044W
0.054W
0.068W
The bottom one is easily fat enough. The wound sixth string which sounds great on my old pull-release D10 didn't work. Plenty of travel in the changer - it just didn't sound right. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Hey Steve,,,I've always used the George L / Jeff Newman uni set. I talked to Joe many years ago and he said he preferred the 70 or 72. I think I have some old Kline brand strings,,,maybe 68, 70, 72. |

What does the brand of guitar have to do with string gauge? Just curious. _________________ Die with Memories. Not Dreams.

I'll take a stab at Neils question about string guages and particular guitars.
1. Scale length may differ from guitar to guitar. The longer the scale the more tension on the strings. You might want to reduce the guage of a string for a really long scale length, or conversely, increase the guuage for a shorter scale guitar.
2. Keyless vs keyed. The Kline is keyless so the total length of a string on average is shorter than with a keyed guitar and once again length affects tension. For example there are many keyed guitars that will frequently break an 0.012 rather than an 0.011 in the third position.
3. Tone. See Ian's post.
4. Darker toned guitars can be brightened up by using stainless steel rather than nickle wound and visa versa. Also the pickup commonly used in the guitar may sound better with one or the other.
These are the points that come to mind immediatley. There are likely others. |

There are many considerations. I think the wound 6th on the old guitar may sound good partly because of the single-coil pickup. And the 6th string on the uni corresponds to the 4th string on the C6 - would anyone put a wound string on there? I'm thinking probably not. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.
Kline U12 String gages:
1st .013
2nd .015
3rd .011 or .012
4th .014
5th .017
6th .020 plain
7th .026 wound
8th .030
9th .036
10th .044
11th .056
12th .072 or .078 or Jeff Newman had me use .080
I was surprised the .080 fits but it does
If you can't get these for the last three strings
you can use .042, .054, .068 from a C6 set. |

Guys, I want to thank you all for taking the time to weigh in on this; I really appreciate it.
Joe Kline, every time I have to change strings on a KEYED guitars, I am appreciative a Kline keyless is at my side. Of course there are more important reasons for owning one oher than the ease of string changing strings but those who have them know that. Sonny Jenkins can attest to that, particularly as he is building one modeled after yours. stevet |

whooaaa,,,hang on Steve,,,I'm not building one yet,,,too busy trying to rebuild this original. After seeing all the ingenuity that went into this one,,,I'm starting to think I may have set my sights a little too high. It has truly been a learning experience,,,I hate to think of how it would have turned out were it not for Joe's help. |
