I don't know of any Filipino steel players, but there is an American steel player living in Manila. His name is Godfrey Arthur.

Forum member Harry Johansen is from Norway, but has a house in Valencia (outside Dumaguete, in Negros). I am not sure of his current plans, but has considered spending part of each year there during retirement. Don Brown was spending a good bit of time in Tanjay, Negros. Haro Echter plays lap steel with the blues band at the Roadhouse Manila most Sunday nights, but he's not a member here. Don Benoit knows of a couple of steelers up North of Manila - one plays at a bar in Angeles City, the other is in Baguio.

You mention Bobby Ingano who is the first player I heard on youtube playing Waipio to inspire me to finally get started again after a hiatus of over forty years. I have emailed him several times but I have had no response so I'm not sure if he received them. I would love for him to mentor me a little on that beautiful song. |

Just Googled this:
According to Cris Bordon, patriarch and head of the Midnight Rodeo Band, he grew up with country music. He shares that his uncle used to play the fiddle (violin) while his father played country music on the radio all-day long. His influences are Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Hank Snow.
When he was a teenager, Cris started to join a band with his brother, and played rock and roll music from the Beetles and the Rolling Stones. Years after he found himself going back to playing his first love, country music.
From just playing the guitar, Cris learned how to play the steel guitar — a string instrument positioned horizontally where strings are plucked with one hand and the other hand changing the pitch of one or more string with a use of a slide called steel(he claims that he’s the only Filipino who knows how to play this instrument).

Chris Brooks, have you ever heard Chris Bordon's band live? If so, how do they sound? I wonder if he is still playing that red Williams steel.

No, Steve, I only met him once, about 1988,when I did a DOD tour to the Phils, Japan, Okinawa.
But I recently read some good reviews of the band on Tripadvisor and FB. They play at Midnight Rodeo, in Angeles City.
I imagine he is still playing that nice little Williams!
Say, maybe you should drop in sometime on your way back from the PRC, Steve!

They have a lot of trouble saying 'fresh fish'. The term Filipino is correct, though, in the English language. |

My reason for this post is that I came to know a Filipino band from Olongapo who visited Calgary for the Calgary Stampede in 1982 and they were very good in my opinion. I drove them to a music store at the time where there was a Sho-Bud (I think) on display and I have wanted one ever since. This year I bought a Jackson Sho-Bud finally. Now if I could only play it - I'm starting to get some recognizable sounds so it is coming.
My wife is a Filipina and we go to the Philippines from time to time. I wondered if there were any Filipino steel players there that I could meet and perhaps learn to play some of the Filipino songs like Dahil Sa Iyo. |

I have played Dahil Sa Iyo twice with Imelda Marcos singing. She had great....shoes.
