I set the Half and Half at around
treble 6
Mids 7
bass 4
I have a combo with a 15"
I am very happy with the amp. It is sounding fantastic and weighs less than my pack a seat.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the settings. It doesn't get shrill or muddy.

Hey, Roger, glad to hear you got one. Fantastic amp! I've found it hard to get a bad sound no matter how I set it… Like many open back amps I find I mostly have to adjust the low end for different venues and stages. Mine had a bit too much reverb on tap for my taste, Tim suggested a tube replacement that helped a lot with that. Have fun...

For the past few weeks, I've been doing this (approximately):
Treble: 6 (sometimes 7)
Mids: 6
Bass: 4
I've found that I can blend the reverb in pretty well with the tone on 6-7. I leave the reverb around three and occasionally turn it up for ballads.
I have the 15" combo and really dig it. Now to figure out a good overdrive pedal/setting. |

In my old Fender amps I sub the 12AT7 with a 12AU7.
Might be the same for Tim's amp (?) |

the low gain portion will handle the reverb return and the high gain portion will keep the overall gain of the amplifier intact. I tend to build amps with the Ben and Jerrys approach - too much of everything. Its easier to take reverb away than it is to add it back in

It gave me a good bit more available adjustment range on the lower end of the reverb blend.

Note that the first few Half and Half amps had much more intense reverb, and then Tim changed the circuit to moderate it a bit...so depending on when yours was built, these comparisons might not be valid.
The tube change will moderate it even more if needed, regardless of which model you have.
Be sure to use the tube Mark mentions - you have to keep one side of the tube hot and cut back only the other half, so this tube is the right one...just subbing a tube with overall lower gain is not the thing to do.

My settings are typically:
Vol 5
Treb 7
Mid 6
Bass 5
For my Williams guitars, which both have humbuckers in them
Regarding reverb - its tough to get the circuit so its perfect for everybody. Some people, myself included, want to be able to go from light verb to full on drenching. I do a lot of session work and this is a useful range for me. Others want just a touch of reverb - and luckily since its a tube preamp and reverb thats an easy modification to do!
12DW7 is the tube you want because the second half of this particular tube drives the amp module. A 12DW7 has gain similar to a 12AU7 on one triode (reverb recovery in this case) and gain similar to a 12AX7 on the other triode (power amp interface). Its the perfect swap for those who want less reverb.
For me... I use the 12AX7 and keep the verb cranked when I play outdoors, and dialed back when I play indoors. When its session time, anything goes. I have been told by a few H+H owners that this is "the best reverb I have ever heard" so go ahead and turn it up

Just got my 12" combo. The tone is excellent. What really surprised me was the transparency of the DI for recording. Now I don't have to worry about the pedal mechanical sounds leaking into my mic. Perfect!

I just had the reverb tube replaced and now I want to take a look and see what they put in there! |

anything less is remarkably muddy - all tubes have been replaced. Sounds good set this way but not much modulation left and forget a tele bridge pickup, it wont deliver.
Theres something wrong.

Keith - where are you setting your volume knob?
if you have all of the EQ controls at 10, and the volume nearly all the way down, you might be causing this issue.
I would start with all knobs at 12 o'clock (volume included) and make small adjustments from there. If its too loud for you with the volume up that high, use the second input. |

Thanks Tim it improves it a little. Im living with this oddity, just keep reaching out for an 'aha' solution.
Its kind of like all the useable modulation happens between # 7 and 9 on the EQ settings, at least with the volume set at 12 o clock which is darn loud already otherwise its dark. Set up like this it sounds great.
BTW Your customer service is very good you personally responded to several emails I sent regarding this already.
