For those of you who might be interested . .

"Soledad" (Spanish for "loneliness" or "solitude") is a piece written by the Argentinean nuevo tango composer Astor Piazzolla. It's also the title song of my new album.

https://youtu.be/mfIXaEum_ZM

I hope you enjoy it.

Outstanding! Astor Piazzolla is somebody I cannot say enough about. I can't imagine another steel player doing his work justice. Thanks for that treat, Susan.

That was exquisite, Susan. Beautifully played. I especially love the long, low basslines throughout. I look forward to listening to the whole disk soon.

Brava!

Simply beautiful.
I love the full, very Spanish chords that come near the end.

Thanks, Charlie, Ed, and Daniel. I'm glad you liked the video.

The arrangement I played was transcribed (by ear) from Astor Piazzolla's quintet version - bandoneon, guitar, piano, violin, and bass. It was such a beautiful song that from the first time I heard it (28 years ago) I knew I'd have to find a way to record it. The challenge with this piece (and the other Piazzolla songs that accompanied it on the new album) was that I had to distill the essence and, as much as possible, the structural integrity onto one instrument with twelve strings, some pedals, knee levers, a thumb, and three fingers. There were places where I was able to get it for the most part note for note, other places where it was possible if I worked on it a lot, and other places where I had to make executive decisions and write my own version.

Here, for comparison's sake, if you're curious, is the original version that captivated me so much all those years ago and still does:

Oops. My apologies, Jim; I guess I typed and hit send before looking.

So . . .

Jim Cohen, incredible steel guitarist (I speak for all of us), musician of rapier wit and intellect that you are, thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad you liked the video.

Oh my God, Micky! When it rains it pours. Micky, you are not chopped liver either, and I am so sorry.

And Larry, thank you.

I am, appropriately, chastened.

So anyway, there's this song "Soledad" that is a quintet of blah blah blah, and I did this and that to adapt it to etc. etc.

Thanks, Ken, I'm glad you like it. Piazzolla's music has a special place in my heart.

Detractors. It feels kind of weird, though it's not unusual in music, to have detractors (I remember once in the British Steelies forum being compared to Adolph Hitler), but everyone has their own tastes in music. As for myself, I cannot think of one steel guitarist whose music I dislike (except for Jerry Garcia, Robert Randolph, and myself); I feel there is something to learn from everyone.
