This forum is a good place to find out about things but some people just come across wrong and make it not good to be on. I have gotten some really unnecessary comments on my topic and private messages are the way to go for that. _________________ Franklin D10 Stereo - 8 and 6 - Black Box-Zum Encore 4 and 5 Nashville 400,Session 400, DD3 for delay ,also Benado Effects pedal.

Looks very '70s--especially the CBS-style headstock logo. Serial number (4-bolt neck plate) would likely be 5 digits or L + 5 digits. a '63 neck (end) would be stamped with a neck style #, month abbreviation + two-digit year.
Below is a 1963 P-bass headstock and decal:

Here is the end of the neck and The fender Company also confirmed it.Body number is 390348 on plate. I called Fender and sent pics of the bass and number and he said it was a 1963. I see other differences with yours too. The your fret board is dark and mine is light.

I would have to agree, it is not a 1963 based on the logo.

Among the many other things which don't fit, Fender wasn't making maple fretboards like that in '63, only rosewood. There is nothing about that bass that looks remotely from that period. |

I am just going by what they told me about the bass. I have had it many years and just was looking to see what it would sell for. Looks like I have lots of experts on here so I guess the Fender Corporation does not know what they make. Take it down Bob. I am not going to discuss this anymore. I sure didn't want to put up false advertisement, Just going by what I was told By Jeff and Fender. All are telling what what it is not so someone tell me what it is. _________________ Franklin D10 Stereo - 8 and 6 - Black Box-Zum Encore 4 and 5 Nashville 400,Session 400, DD3 for delay ,also Benado Effects pedal.

I'd be happy to help. Can you send pictures of the butt end of the neck, the neck pocket in the body, the codes on the pots and dates under the pickups, the serial number and a close-up of the decal on the headstock to andysguitars@hotmail.com . |

i assure you that you do not have a 1963 pbass. what is on the end of that neck is NOTHING like what is on the end of a real one. the oldest your bass could be is 1969. thats when they started using that logo. also your bass has an added finger rest. in 1974 the finger rest that is on your bass below the g string was moved to above the E string. you have an added finger rest, but the original one is still there. so, your bass can be no older than 1969 and no younger than 1974.
"not no way, not no how!!!".....wizard of oz
this is what the ink stamp on the end of a 63 pbass looks like.

Here are some more pics of it. It had a hole where I put the thumb rest and I made that and put it on along with the bridge. The original is in the case. The other rest at the bottom was on it.I sent the end of the neck picture above as you can see. I did some more research and I found some 1975 Pbass that look like mine. Not an expert by a long shot but here is where you can find out what you don't have..

You can get an idea what that neck code means here - http://www.ggjaguar.com/neckcode.htm
Dating 70s Fenders is slightly tricky. This is not from Fender, but from Greg Gagliano, who is pretty much authoritative on dating old Fenders. He has spent years piecing together lots of disparate info on this kind of stuff. Fender cares more about the guitars they're making now than 40-60 year old ones, IMO. This is definitely a 70s Fender P-Bass, not an early 60s one. |
