Hi Gang...

So I go into Barnes & Noble today.

I look for a copy of Lap Steel Monthly.
Hmmmm...nothing there.

I look for a copy of Dobro Player Magazine.
Hmmmm...nothing there.

I look for a copy of Weissenborn Journal
Hmmmm...nothing there.

OK I ain't smart enough to play Pedal Steel
but i'll look for Pedal Steel Review.
Hmmmm...nothing there.

Everyone get where I am coming from here?

There are 9 bizzillion magazines about electric guitar...Hey thats ok I play electric guitar in a Classic Rock/Country Band and I do buy Premier Guitar most months.

And yes there is Acoustic Guitar Magazine that I do on occasion buy...though they need to add about 30 pages to it to make it worth the price.

Fret Board Journal is wonderful
I have a subscription to that one!

I do have have about 6 very old issues of Steel Guitarist, but I have read them many many times and for that matter they were mostly about pedal steel.

There is no magazine aimed at a person who plays a guitar with a steel bar in their left hand!

Now I know that this is a specialized field.

But I can buy a magazine every month that will be all about the migrating habits of the Red Tipped Barn Swallow but I can't get a magazine that deals with any type of Steel Guitars!

Sure there are places on line with info.
But I like a paper magazine that I can read in my easy chair or on the porch or at lunch at work.

Enough of my grumbling...

Ill go and play my guitar

Yes, welcome to the itty bitty, tiny world of steel guitar... a little corner of a subset of a section of a genre of the music biz. Everyone in the world knows what a banjo is, and what a ukulele is, but very few know what a steel guitar is. Sad

But on the bright side.......we are unique. When I play lap steel it always seems to draw interest, and get a positive reaction.

Almost everyone knows someone who plays guitar or they play themselves.

I'm with you Russ. I would love a print magazine, even a quarterly one, but I don't think it's realistic

I agree about the Steel and Dobro being unique.

Although I am learning these instruments for my own pleasure and growth, I am looking forward to adding them to the music I play with my Trio. (Classic Rock/Country)
Once in a blue moon I might see a Steel Guitar or a Dobro in a band in this area. I'm not saying the addition of these instruments will cause people to flock to see us.
And I am not doing it as a "novelty thing", but it will make some of our songs have a different sound than most bands have.

What Andy said. There have been several folks who started Steel magazines with all kinds of feedback about the many who would purchase… not to follow up.

I'm with you about loving to read a hard-copy magazine, especially on the porch. Two suggestions- there are old copies of the various steel magazines for sale, b0b sells the WONDERFUL Tom Bradshaw Steel Guitarist mags here in the store, Russ Rask's "Steel Guitar World " mags often come up for sale, there are a lot of 'em, as there are years worth of several pedal steel club magazines, all of which have at least a few articles on dobro and non-pedal stuff. Beverly King had years and years of Dobro mags published as well. There are some good reprints in a mag called "Resophonic Echoes".

last resort, take your computer out on the porch and start haunting google. Lots more on the inter web than we ever can get to. Best of luck.

Yep....

I have already transferred my Dobro Lessons From Troy for Dobro on to my 10" Tablet so I can practice on my porch!

I just need the weather here in NYS to get to where one would desire to be on their porch!

Also at work I have nothing but Dobro music playing from my computer!

everything you need is probably right here anyway.

i took a month a few years back and went back to the OLD archives - 'non pedal' or something like that and read all the posts going back to the late 90's - i learned a lot from that endeavor. covered just about everything you 'need' to know about steel guitar.

i bought a stack of the old Steel Guitar World mag some time ago but they were so poorly written it was hard to read them. i don't mean to critic the effort (cause i know it was a lot of work to publish), but for the reader it was about as bland as could be....so, imo, you aren't missing anything

Most, if not all, of the publications mentioned here were published in the pre-internet era, 1980s and 90s. It was hard enough back then to keep a steel guitar magazine afloat, but nowadays it would probably be impossible. This Forum is the center of steel guitar news and information now.

I understand that in the past there have been attempts at magazines aimed at our interests...and they have failed.

And I am certainly not suggesting that anyone attempts
this again!

Particularly not in these days of the internet!

It's just that on many occasions I like to have a paper magazine in my hand instead of a computer/tablet.

As an example...

In August I'll be on vacation for two weeks at a cabin on a lake where there is no Wi Fi. I'll have my lessons on my tablet and I'll be practicing a lot (and driving my Sweetie nuts) but when I want to relax and read about Dobros and Steel Guitars I am out of luck!

CenterStream Publishing has 2 - or 3 books specifically about Lap Steel Guitar , all are must have archives.

Andy Volk, is is one of the Authors, I believe he has more than one related publication you will enjoy on that and many more holidaze.

Hopefully some one will chime in on the specifics of these and any others not mentioned so far.

Read Robert Stone's book on Sacred Steel. Read Jerry Byrd's autobiography. Read any music book--I've learned more from pianists than any other instrument.

I just like to have paper magazines or books to read while relaxing...particularly on vacation. I will check out the library. (I got time before August) Never learned any thing from a pianist but frustration.....I have a key board but aside from knowing where the notes are and hitting one handed simple chords it stays in the corned of the room.

You learn about the philosophy of other musicians and their mental approach as well as their education in music. Infinitely more exciting to me.

The only mag I still get is Vintage Guitar. There is some of it I enjoy. Not sure of other mags that are out now. But I think our best bet is to start a email campaign to ONE asking for articles and interviews with steel /reso/dobro players and makers. Amp makers also. Offering a few thousands new subscribers. They may even get new advertisers. Just and idea may have been done before.

Not quite Andy, OK we are a limited issue, quarterly, heavily subsidised by ourselves. (It's our hobby)
BUT we have been in existence since December 2002, and I've written articles about lap steel and also published advanced tablature in every one of the 49 issues since then.

A few more subscribers and we may even break even, but we won't hold our breath 'til then..

I am in agreement with Mike Neer on this one.

Lately I have been engrossed in the music of Thelonious Monk. There is a whole lot to learn from him about rhythm, phrasing and harmony. Wonderful stuff.

Thanks for the mention of my book, Mike. If someone is looking for lessons in how to play in the "sacred steel" style, this is not the source. But if you are interested in who the sacred steel community is, some interesting biographical anecdotes, how the music evolved and how it functions in the church environment, that is contained in the book.

All the best,

Bob

Hi Gang...

Here I am beating on this poor dead horse.

I was in Wegmans grocery store today.

In the magazine section there was a copy of Ukelele Magazine. Are that many of the Wegmans shoppers people who play the Ukelele?

On the occasion that the subject comes up with non musicians, I often have to inform them that the Ukelele is not a toy or a childs instrument!

One would think that the total amount of Pedal Steel/Lap Steel and Dobro Players would equal the Ukelele Players out there in the world!

But then again what the hell do I know?(grin)

There is no comparison. Ukulele is incredibly popular today. We sell 8 to 10 ukes per week at the music store where I teach guitar and steel... and only 2 or 3 steel guitars per year. I have four weekly uke students, and ukes have been featured on some recent pop songs. They are cheap and easy to play.
