ok this is my problem and I hope some one can set me straight.. I have built an 8 string pedal steel with straight fingers. now what I need to know is how to raise and lower the E strings on the same finger changer. any helpful suggestions would help. I can raise it with no problem but cant figure out how to lower the same string on the same straight finger. thank you .... Dan |

Richard Burton has a handy diagram, and he'll be along shortly. I suggest editing your top post and change the subject line to mention pull-release.
One rod raises the string, it will need enough slack to allow the lower to drop.
Another rod lowers. The value of the lowered note should be set by a screw stopping the finger.
This rod will have a spring at the other end, pulling it back up.
There are two ways of tuning the open note: you can attach an adjusting screw to the lever return stop (since there's a return spring on the rod, you'll need a stop to establish the open note) and tune the 4th string E under the guitar, or you can give the lever a fixed return stop thread the lowering rod and give the rod a tuning nut. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

Lane described how you could do it as a pull release. The alternative, which is too late because you have finished the guitar, it sounds like, is an all-pull for lowers like a Bigsby. You have a two armed crank behind the changer that when pulled with a cable or rod on the top wing the lower arm pulls the finger toward the end plate. Either way, as Lane describes, your lower will fight a dedicated and tunable rod that returns your finger to a floating but repeatable open. _________________ Chris Lucker
