My hopes that Ronald Vaughan who's yt'd other Lui recordings would find this 'lost' tape and viola here it is in gloriously crummy audio quality and she really tears it up at times including terrific vocals and accompaniment for 30 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XD0wuO3Qe0
Considering these were recorded on the fly in somebody's crowded kitchen (?!) mid '50s and being so incredibly rare to hear Elizabeth 'Lovey Lui' Conn at all it's actually quite listenable and enjoyable, plus the great old Hawaiian style and musicianship of the day displayed here is sadly not heard any more.
Has another kitchen ever sounded so good? |

This is a real treasure, and any imperfection is easily handled by my Nostalgia-tron brain implant which is so technologically advanced that it doesn't change a thing. The vocals are gorgeous and the first half of the tape reminds me a great deal of the vocals on the John K. Almeida's records he did with Genoa Keawe and the Hula Maids. "Ka Nani A'o Hilo" is an example. Hearing so much material from Lovey Lui is almost like having a regular album. I am going to put it on USB for the car. I recognize two of the numbers, it would be nice to identify the others. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

This is among the coolest aspects of this forum .... sharing private, personal yet fascinating recordings, images, etc. with folks who would otherwise never see or even know about them. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Would have liked to have heard this " clean " --- I,m afraid there is some " track bleed " --- it is just too dis-jointed --- sounds like the tape is damaged or the heads need aligning --- any ideas ?
I must say that vocals are so nahe-nahe --- tho i only listened to a couple of songs . |

Ian, to have this cleaned up would be a godsend and it probably can be done now but it'd most likely be expensive. Give the whole tape a run, it may clean up a bit as it goes or maybe I'm like David and am used to bad recordings that I tend to not hear the interfering aspects as much when the material is so good. I knew the usual suspects would dig this find and am stoked the owner put it out with another lost gem of the golden era now recovered. Despite the sonic annoyances this tape really helps put Lovey on the map for the few that still care about these fleeting times and the people that made them special, maybe a few new fans will be had as well. As David mentions, it'd be nice to have all the song titles ID'd. |

Ea, Ea! or however it is spelled.
Song 2 is E Mau, by Alvin Isaacs. It really rocks. Owana Salazar must have heard this tape.
Song 4 is Waikapu sometimes called Inikiniki Malie, written by James Kahele. This version is slightly different than others in the melody.
Lost count about three quarters through they do Moanalua.

Excellent. She plays with a slight edgier approach , and still milks out each note. |

I took it upon myself to try to clean this up a little bit, I hope all are ok with that.
It is still a little dark at the beginning, but it does get better as it progresses.
It should be easier to hear the guitar and vocals, and I trimmed the tubby low end down a little.
Jay
Well, I guess drop box isn't happy about all the bandwidth we've been using.
I am uploading the file to another site and I will post another link later today- check back later
