Looking at the new listings and it has a starting bid of $200. Looks like it would need a little tlc but I THINK these are rare?

You mean this one? It's a modified 6-string. There was a 10-string Century, but never an 8-string version.

Unless I'm mistaken, there were 90 Century 10s all made in 1952.

A 10-string sold on eBay about a month ago. I'm always surprised at how little the Century 6 sells for. They seem to be undervalued or maybe unappreciated. Sellers ask a lot, but they seldom sell for those high prices.

Folks that definitely is an 8 string Gibson Century, I am looking at it right now.
It needs new tunings knobs and the paint looks poor in some areas.

Look at the picture of the back of the peghead. The two tuners closest to the nut were added later.

Not only added later but a botched up job. I would have added the 2 new tuning machines at the top............. looks like more than enough room.

I've only seen the black kind and a lot of high priced ultratones on eBay lately. The lack one is cool but what I wouldn't give for a shot at one of those blue ones in decent shape for a fair price. Mmm.

The following information is straight from the Duchossoir book:

The only postwar Gibson regular production 8-string lap steel was the 8-string Skylark. He estimates no more than 40 were produced in 1958.

The only postwar 10-string was the Century, with 90 units shipped from 1948 to 1956. All that have been observed to date are black.

141 Ultratone 7-strings were built from 1948 to 1955. Most were white, but some had the later blonde-topped mahogany body.

My personal observation on the Century-10 is that it's not merely a Century-6 body with four additional strings tacked on. All its dimensions are proportionately larger; it's about 2" longer overall, about 9/16" inches wider at the nut and 1/2" wider at the lower bout. It also has a wider nut, bridge, pickup, mounting plate, hand-rest, and fingerboard.
