I've see this amp talked about on the Steel forum a few times but I've never seen any schematics or info on who actually designed it. Over the holidays I was reading through an older audio magazine and came across an article from the designer of the amp with references to the project info and schematics.
The project started in 1975 and the amp was produced by the Gretsch division the the Baldwin Piano and Organ company.
So who knows who the designer actually is? |

Wasn't that a Ken Cain design virtually identical to the Sho-Bud single channel amp?
Basically a JFET variation on a Twin Reverb...

re: Ken Cain design virtually identical to the Sho-Bud single channel amp?
It may be similar, I haven't compared it however, It wasn't designed by Ken Cain
I'll give a clue about the designer's :
Clue 1: It was a husband and wife team that were hired as consultants. |

Clue 2: Jim Evans Designed the Sho-Bud Amps not Ken Cain.
Re: Ken Cain design virtually identical to the Sho-Bud single channel amp?
So I came home and quit my day job at McGuire Sound System, a commercial sound business. Wound up in the amp business from 1965-69. Built all the amps for Sho-Bud and put their name on them. The contract finally ran out. I’d fly up there on weekends and do the work. Sho-Bud would send a plane for me. Sometimes I’d fly commercial.
The contract finally ran out, so I thought I’d be out of the amp business but still kept getting calls.

But it wasn't Jim Evans on this design |

re:Woody Woodell
No, sorry Doug but you can read Woody's answer to the question in this old post:

The Cain and Sho-Buds were designed by Kenneth Cain. The tone was very similar, possibly the Cain a little smoother with the higha a little tamer. Both sounded great! A good example of a Cain being put to good use was Lloyd Green playing thru one on Mel Street's recording of "Borrowed Angel".
I believe the Gretsch is the same circuit as the Cain. I'll send you a copy of both.
re:The Cain and Sho-Buds were designed by Kenneth Cain
We know that's not correct.
re:I believe the Gretsch is the same circuit as the Cain.
That's not correct either.
Because you got the answer wrong I think you should send me one of your beautiful Stage One Pedal Steel guitars ( I really like light blue) |

OK, who designed the Sho Bud Studio/Stage 500, avail as a single, and dual channel, around '76? It is a different design, and at least double the power. ? |
