Big Jim is one of the unsung steel guitar heros, Like jimmy Day. He's been a marvelous pedal and lap steel players since the 70's. Last time I saw him was with Asleep At The Wheel about 10 year ago. He was playing his ShoBud ProIII, his chocolate brown D8 Stringmaster, and tenor sax. BTW, his little brother, Wally, played some amazing steel in Pure Prairie League back in the day.

I saw him when he came through here with Vassar Clements. Blew me away. Then, when I was in Nashville with my band, we were invited to come play some with the band Jim was with then. This would be 1983. I can't remember the name of the hotel, but the club was like on the top floor or close to it. Not on the ground floor as I remember. Jim told me that the band members varied depending who was not on the road. You can imagine how nervous I was. Jim was really nice and suportive. It was cool playing a few songs along side him. One of the most memorable moments of my career.

as a matter of fact this was one of the best bands i`ve seen ever.
to this day i still can feel what a thrill it was to watch them play.
sad part is that ron and murph died as totally underrated players and singers. Sad

Here's the link that I had to shorten to get it to work. It's the first one posted & not sure why it wouldn't open.

Back in the mid 60's,on occasion I worked with Mary Lou Turner on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree of which she was a member. This was before she went to work for Bill Anderson. Big "Murph" was the staff steel player on the jamboree. I remember his wife at the time was a drummer and she worked with various Wheeling acts on appearances at country music parks in the eastern US.
