Topic: Volume pedal on a lap steel? |

| I was watching the 'Transatlantic Sessions' here on RTE1 (The main Irish TV channel)...it's a great show with some fine musicians, notably Tim O'Brien and Jerry Douglas. I'm sure I heard Jerry using a volume pedal whilst playing his lap steel. It sounded for all the world exactly like a PSG, so I'm just asking...was I imagining it, or is it common practice to use a volume pedal wth a lap steel? |

PS: This week, there was a guy called Teddy Thompson on the show I mentioned singing 'She thinks I still care' Backing vocalists included Mary Chapin Carpenter, plus Tim O'Brien on fiddle.
I have never heard a country song sung so well, it was IMHO one of the simplest but best performances I have ever heard of any song. Try and source it if you can.(RTE player) This was the track on which Jerry Douglas used the Lap Steel with a volume pedal. Sublime! |

| I should have checked youtube before I posted! Type in TEDDY THOMPSON SHE THINKS I STILL CARE on YouTube and you'll hear Jerry Douglas using (I think) a volume pedal on his lap steel, You'll also get to hear the song I'm so taken by. |

| Now that beats hands down most all the crap coming out of Nashville these days. I don't think he's using a volume pedal, it's just his deft and masterful touch. |

Yes,I'm inclined to agree, the more I listen. And Teddy Thompson is the son of Richard Thompson ( ex Fairport Convention!) so that explains the obvious talent!
Ps: Give my regards to the Bay of Islands....what a holiday that was! |

| Don't know about those folks, but in the 40s & 50s many steel players used a volume pedal. I did, and all the players I knew did also. And I still have the DeArmond pedal from those days, but never use it these days........mostly because it eats volume pots ! |

Wayne Hancock is heavily influenced by Hank Williams, yet still maintains his own unique style. A steel guitarist, Jeremy Wakefield, has recorded with him on lap steel. Although he makes it sound like pedal steel. The trick is in the volume pedal.
